| A classic pitchers duel between Josh Beckett and Jeff Weaver to begin the Fenway season. Neither pitcher had a chance at a shutout because all the scoring happened in the first inning! Beckett in fact allowed the first two batters hits, an Ichiro single and Adrian Belter's double for an RBI. The Mariners would not score again. In the Red Sox first, a Kevin Youkilis walk, an Ortiz double, and red-hot Manny knocks them both in with a single. That would also end the Sox scoring, as Beckett and Weaver took over from there. Beckett goes 8, allows only 5 hits, the one run, and a walk while striking out 9 to go to 2-0. Paps comes in for the 9th and strikes out the side for save number 3 to send the fans home happy. |

At Fenway Park, the Boston faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Josh Beckett(2-0) finally bested his Seattle counterpart, Jeff
Weaver(0-1), by the score of 2 to 1.
Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning as they scored 2 runs
on 3 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. The pitchers
took over after the 1st inning as neither team was able to score again.
Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 3rd save. Weaver took the loss. He
surrendered 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.
