end of July standings

The Red Sox are the hottest team in the majors right now, winning 24 of their last 30 games opening up an 8 game lead in the division. Since straightening out the Giants (June 22 on the schedule) they have slumped off going 14-18 since then but maintain their NL West lead. Two division leaders are below .500, all in the Central (AL Central Minn-Clev tie two games below .500, NL Central St. Louis one game below .500)

Also of interest, the Phillies hate playing the division rival Mets. 11 times so far this season, and they have lost all 11 games. A lot of ground to make up from the boys from Philly, which they had better start doing pretty damn quick.

July 31, 2007 Cubs 7, Phillies 4

A bit of a patchwork lineup with both Shane Victorino and Michael Bourn joining Chase Utley on the disabled list, but leadoff man Greg Dobbs led the game off with a homerun and it looked okay early. However, a four run Cubs 4th inning turns a 3-2 Phillie lead into a 6-3 defecit. Pat Burrell gets a run back in the 8th with a solo homer, but Jacque Jones gets a homer himself in the Cubs 8th to put the lead back to three, and 7-4 is the final.

Adam Eaton, even with going 2 for 2 at the plate, suffers yet another loss dropping to a dismal 5-13 on the year. Those 13 losses puts him one shy of leading the majors in losses, with Jeff Suppan of the Brewers ahead of him at 6-14.

Ryan Howard, after striking out 10 times in the previous three games, also had a solo homer for the Phils for his team leading 28th of the year.

July 31, 2007 Red Sox 4, Orioles 2

The Sox close out the month of July in style, with Josh Beckett getting win number 12. After two straight shutouts, Beckett does allow a couple of runs today, although one wasn't his fault when Jay Payton ripped a double with a wild throw by Wily Mo Pena allowing Payton to score. Jonathan Papelbon allows two singles in the 9th, but strikes out the last batter with the tying run at first base for save number 28.

Speaking of strikeouts, Orioles starter Erik Bedard got whiff number 200 for the season when he struck out Coco Crisp for the first out of the 7th inning. 201 now for Bedard, the major league leader in K's. Jake Peavy of the Padres leads the NL with 191.

WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Corey Patterson robbed Wily Mo Pena of an extra base hit.

In a close game the Boston Red Sox got by the Baltimore Orioles by the score
of 4 to 2.

The game started off with Boston taking the lead in the first as they scored 2
runs on 2 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Manny Ramirez
who electrified Fenway Park when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run
(his 26th of the season). Baltimore threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.

The winning pitcher was Josh Beckett(12-4) who allowed 2 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 28th. The loss was charged to
Erik Bedard(6-10). He surrendered 7 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Beckett said,
'this was one of those times.'

July 30, 2007 Phillies 7, Cubs 2

The Phillies begin a 7 game Midwest road trip with a stop at Wrigley Field for a four game Cubs series, and Cole Hamels comes out shining. Hamels struck out the side on 9 pitches in the first inning, has 7 K through the first 3, and gets 15 strikeouts all together as he goes the distance. Hamels also pokes out two singles and knocks in a run. Homeruns for Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Aaron Rowand also help out the offense.

Not helping the offense any is Ryan Howard. He goes 0 for 5, striking out all 5 times to the plate! That makes Howard and Jim Thome of the White Sox the only players so far this season to have 0 for 5, 5 whiff days at the plate. A-Rod of the Yankees also had 5 whiffs in a game, but in 7 atbats in an 18 inning game. Pat Burrell also whiffs 3 times for the game.

27 strikeouts all together between the two teams, the 15 for Hamels and 12 for the Cubs pitchers (8 of those by Burell and Howard). With all the free swingers on these two teams, not surprising.

Cole Hamels dominated striking out 15 Chicago (NL) batters at Wrigley Field
where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago (NL) Cubs by the score of 7
to 2.

Hamels(6-10) was very good in the win. He allowed just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings. Philadelphia banged out 12 hits on the night.

Ted Lilly(9-8) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the
Philadelphia offense and allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

Lou Piniella was impressed with Hamels and his 15 strikeouts. 'It's tough to
generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'

July 29, 2007 Pirates 9, Phillies 6

The free-swinging Phillies strike out 12 times against Ian Snell in the first 6 innings, but finally get to him for 3 runs in the 7th and get 3 more in the 8th to make a 9-0 Pirates lead look semi-respectable. Not that all of that 9-0 lead was Kyle Kendrick's fault, as two errors by Tadahiti Iguchi lead to 4 unearned runs of the 8 allowed by Kendrick. Jimmy Rollins hits his 20th homerun of the year today.

The winning streak gets snapped at four games.

Xavier Nady had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Ian Snell whiffed 12 batters at Citizen's

Snell(4-9) pitched a fine game. He allowed 6 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.
Philadelphia could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th.

Kyle Kendrick(3-4) ended up with the loss. His ERA increased from 3.28 to
3.69 as he allowed 8 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. 'Everything felt great'
Snell said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody
today.'

June 29, 2007 Red Sox 11, Devil Rays 6

The long ball and the base on balls are the Sox friends today. Wily Mo Pena smashes 2 homeruns as part of a 4 for 5 day at the plate as he scores 4 times, Doug Mirabelli rips a 2-run homer and David Ortiz gets the granny off Scott Kasmir when Kasmir totally falls apart in the 3rd inning.

In that Sox 3rd, Kasmir got two of the first four hitters out with a single for Pena and walking Mirabelli in the mix. Then he just collapses, walking both Crisp and Pedroia with Pedroia's walk forcing a run. In comes Papi who rips it over the fence for the grand slam, ending Kasmir's day. 10 walks for the Rays pitchers today, twice walking batters with the bases loaded.

Not that Daisuke Matsuzaka was much better on the Sox side, but he does go the required 5 innings to earn the win despite allowing 6 runs and 10 hits for win number 11 on the year. Kyle Snyder, Javier Lopez and Manny Declarmen finish out the game for the Sox, holding the Rays to only two hits the rest of the way.

Wily Mo Pena ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox topped the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays by a score of 11 to 6 at Tropicana Field.

Pena led the offense for Boston. He stroked a one-base hit in the 2nd inning,

inning and blasted a solo shot (his 4th of the season) in the 9th inning.
Boston had a total of 14 hits for the game.

The win was credited to Daisuke Matsuzaka(11-5) who went 5 innings allowing 6
runs. The loss was charged to Scott Kazmir(8-7). He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 6 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Pena said. 'That's it'

July 28, 2007 Phillies 12, Pirates 5

After scoring 15 runs in last games shellacking, the Phillies go to double digits again as they win their 4th straight, which is the longest winning streak of the season. Shane Victorino knocks in half of those 12 runs with a 2-run homer, a 2-run double and a 2-run single. Even pitcher J. D. Durbin gets in on the act scoring twice without an official atbat, as he walked once and reached on an error once scoring both times.

Right fielder Shane Victorino lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 6 RBI
at Citizen's Bank Park as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh
Pirates 12 to 5.

Victorino provided much of the offense. He popped a two-run clout over the
fence (his 12th of the season) in the 4th inning, delivered a single bringing
in two baserunners in the 5th inning and doubled knocking in a run in the 7th
inning. Pittsburgh was out-hit by Philadelphia, 12 hits to 9.

J.D. Durbin(2-0) got the win allowing 4 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. The loss
was charged to Shane Youman(2-2). He got hit hard, allowing 7 hits and 5
walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Victorino said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'

July 28, 2007 Devil Rays 4, Red Sox 3

The long ball is both a blessing and a curse for the Sox today. First, the good. Julio Lugo surpasses his real life homer total with his 9th of the year in the 5th off Jason Shields (scoring Mike Lowell ahead of him, who had gotten the Sox first hit of the game earlier in the inning) scoring 2 and giving the Sox the 2-0 lead. That lead was erased in the bottom of the 6th by Jonny Gomes' 2-run single off Jon Lester which tied the game 2-all.

Delmon Young rips a 2-run blast in the bottom of the 8th off normally reliable Hideki Okajima to give the Rays the 4-2 lead. The Sox get to Rays stopper Al Reyes in the 9th with a David Ortiz solo blast to lead off the inning to narrow the gap to a run, but besides a JD Drew single that was all they would get. Shields with the win goes to 13-3, tying him for the AL lead in wins with Jeremy Guthrie of the Orioles.

The Sox lose their second straight game, the first back-to-back losses since June 25-26, just over a month ago.

James Shields went 8 strong innings as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays defeated the
Boston Red Sox by a score of 4 to 3 at Tropicana Field.

Shields(13-3) was very good in the win. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits
and 1 walk in 8 innings. Boston had a chance to come back in the 9th but
they came up short.

Shields got help from Al Reyes who earned his 18th save. Hideki Okajima(5-5)
suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 1 hit and 1
walk.

'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Gary Lucas said. 'It's bad
enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves,
that's really bad.'

July 27, 2007 Phillies 15, Pirates 3

The Phillie offense goes on cruise control as they open a can of whippas on the Pirates, with an 11 run first inning basically sealing the victory. In that first inning, Jimmy Rollins had two hits (single and 2-run homer), Ryan Howard smashed two homeruns (solo back-to-back with Rollins, and a 3-run smash) and Michael Bourn also got two hits (single and triple knocking in two, and a steal). Even pitcher Jamie Moyer helped his own cause with an RBI single and scoring a run in the first. Moyer already had the 11-0 lead to work with before he threw his first pitch of the game!!

A bit of a different lineup, with Chase Utley going on the disabled list. Rollins went to third in the order, with Michael Bourn leading off and Abraham Nunez getting the start at second base.. Seemed to work like a charm apparently! Recently aquired Tadahito Iguchi makes his Phillie debut, coming in as a pinch-hitter and taking over at second. Brett Myers also just came off the DL, but didn't pitch today.

First baseman Ryan Howard cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Pittsburgh
Pirates were badly beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies, 15 to 3.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Howard. He blasted a solo shot in the 1st inning, smacked a
three-run homer (his 27th of the season) in the 1st inning and laced a
one-base hit in the 4th inning. Philadelphia lit up the scoreboard in the
1st inning with 11 runs on 10 hits. Philadelphia had 17 hits overall, while
Pittsburgh had 10.

Jamie Moyer(8-8) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. John
Van Benschoten(1-4) was given the loss.

July 27, 2007 Devil Rays 6, Red Sox 1

The Red Sox make their first trip to the Trop of the season, and can't get past Jason Hammel. Hammel goes the distance despite 5 walks holding the Red Sox to only 4 hits, with the only Sox run on a Manny homerun. The Rays get 4 in the 2nd inning off Tim Wakefield, and 2 more in the 6th when Jonny Gomes rips Kyle Snyder's first pitch of the game for the 2-run homer.

Not quite as much base stealing attempts as I expected with both Wake and Hammel being +9 holding runners on base, as the Rays get one steal and one for JD Drew on the Sox side. Coco Crisp and Alex Cora were both thrown out trying to steal when a 20 came up each time on the split card. What are the odds of that!!
