July 13, 2007 Phillies 14, Cardinals 0

In a game that looks more like an Eagles-Rams football score, the Phillies get out the tape measure smashing 5 homeruns and put a whuppin' on the NL Central leading Cardinals, beating them by two touchdowns. Greg Dobbs began the barrage with a 2-run dinger in the 2nd, Pat Burrell smokes a 3 run shot in the 3rd, Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard each knock in two with smashes over the fence in the 4th, and Rollins adds another homer with a 2-run blast in the 7th.

Lost in the shuffle of balls flying out of the park is the pitching of Kyle Kendrick, who gets the 7-hitter for his first major league shutout. He almost lost the shutout when the Cards put two runners on in the 9th, but Kendrick whiffs the final two hitters of the game (his only two strikeouts in the game!) as the Cardinals get the big goose egg on the scoreboard.

Kyle Kendrick whitewashed St. Louis and Jimmy Rollins rocketed 2 homeruns and
had 4 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies destroyed the St. Louis Cardinals by a
score of 14 to 0 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Rollins enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He slapped a one-base hit in the
3rd inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 4th inning and
smashed a two-run homer (his 14th of the season) in the 7th inning.
Philadelphia had 14 hits for the night.

Kendrick(2-3) went the distance for the shutout. Kip Wells(5-6) was tagged
with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 2 and
2/3 innings.

'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Rollins said. 'We
played well together as a team.'

July 13, 2007 Giants 7, Dodgers 1

Even with the Giants all straightened out now, Matt Cain still has not lost a game. Cain goes to 14-0 only allowing one run in 7 2/3, and of all things smashed a 4th inning grand slam!! That is his second homerun of the year, too!

In trying out of curiosity to see how many pitchers have hit grand slams in major league history, I uncovered a couple of interesting things. Felix Martinez of the Mariners, on June 23rd of this year, hit a grand slam off of all people Johan Santana for the first grand slam by an American League pitcher since 1971. Braves pitcher Tony Colinger hit TWO grand slams in the same game in a game in 1966 against the Giants. I haven't beem able to find a list of pitchers who have hit grand slams in a game though, I guess it is more than I thought.

Matt Cain added four ribbies to his seasonal total with one swing of the bat
as the San Francisco Giants topped the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers by a score of
7 to 1 at AT&T Park.

Cain had a big evening at the plate. He launched a rocket-shot out of the
park for a Grand Slam homerun in the 4th inning and doubled in the 7th
inning. Los Angeles(NL) was out-hit by San Francisco, 11 hits to 5.

Cain(14-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing
1 run. Chad Billingsley(4-3) was given the loss. He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

July 13, 2007 Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 2

The long ball is instrumental in propelling the Sox to victory today. After the Jays led 2-0, Julio Lugo blasts a solo shot (his 8th - tying his real life total for the year!!) in the 5th inning to cut the lead to one run at 2-1. One inning later, Kevin Youkilis flexes his muscle blasting a 3-run bomb (number 10 for Youk) to give the Sox their first lead of the game, 4-2, and that would be the final.

Toronto leaves 11 on base for the game, 7 on those in the final three innings when they loaded the bases in the 7th and 8th and get one on in the 9th, coming up empty everytime off Lopez, Okajima and Papelbon. Paps gets save number 24, which would give him the NL lead in saves. But it is only second in the AL, as Brian Jenks of the White Sox has 28.

Note of interest: Even with the 28 saves of Jenks, the Pale Hose are still 6 games below .500 at 41-47. That means that Jenks has a save in 68% of the White Sox victories for the season!

plate appearance was by Kevin Youkilis who made the Boston fans a happy lot
when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 10th of the season). Boston had
just 6 hits for the night.

Manny Delcarmen(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings

credited with his 24th save. Shaun Marcum(4-6) was the loser.

July 12, 2007 Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 0

No all-star game yet. I will do that over the nice 3 day weekend when I have time and I am nice and relaxed to play with everything for the game! In the meantime....

The final score may not show it, but this was a pitchers duel between Tim Wakefield and Ray Halladay. With Wakefield and Halladay both on their games today, the Sox don't get their first run until a 5th inning David Ortiz sac fly. The score would stay 1-0 until the Sox explode in the 7th. After an out and a Coco Crisp double, Halladay's day was done and in comes Brian Wolfe. That was a big mistake for the Jays, as the next 6 Sox batters reach base off of Wolfe and Josh Towers, as the Red Sox explode for 7 runs in the inning. The big blows were a Mike Lowell 3-run homer and a Youlk 2-run single.

Wakefield would walk 2 in the 8th and strand both, and a double, single and walk load the bases for Toronto in the 9th. Lyle Overbay grounds into the game-ending double play, and Wake gets the 4 hit shutout.

July 8, 2007 Rockies 9, Phillies 0

Aaron Cook and Jorge Julio of the Rockies combine on the 4-hitter and send the Phils into the all-star nreak on a sour note. Not much to be happy about today, as Colorado pounds out 16 hits (even starter Aaron Cook had two!!) and drop Adam Eaton to 4-10 on the year. Hopefully after the all star break, things will turn around dramatically for the Phillies.

Kaz Matsui hit 2 doubles at Coors Field where the Colorado Rockies beat the
Philadelphia Phillies 9 to 0.

Colorado went ahead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they tallied
3 runs on 4 hits. That was all the runs Aaron Cook(7-4) needed. Colorado
ended up with 16 hits for the game while Philadelphia had 4.

Adam Eaton(4-10) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and
3 walks in 5 innings.

July 8, 2007 Red Sox 7, Tigers 4

Jeff Bailey's first major league homerun, a 2-run shot, gives the Sox the lead in the 5th inning, a lead they would never relinquish. Bailey's blast along with a solo shot for Wily Mo Pena help to overcome the Tigers swinging of the ball. All the Tiger runs were on homeruns off Daisuke Matsuzaka, with a Gary Sheffield 2-run bomb and solo shots for Brandon Inge and Curtis Granderson.

Mike Timlin gets his first save of the season, coming in for a tiring Dice-K with one out in the 8th and staying on for the 9th with the Sox 3-run lead and whiffs 3 while allowing a hit.

This is the final day before the All-Star break. Sox representatives on the AL side include David Ortiz (starting at first base!), Manny Ramirez as the starting left fielder, and Jonathan Papelbon on the pitching staff. On the NL side, Phillie Chase Utley will be the starting second baseman and Jimmy Rollins as the reserve shortstop. Nobody from the Nationals will be on the team this year.

July 7, 2007 Phillies 6, Rockies 5

The losing streak ends at 9 as the Phils finally get a win. but not without a scare. With a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 7th, Chase Utley and Wes Helms commit errors on consecutive batters to allow two unearned runs to score, making it a 4-3 Phillie lead. I am saying oh no, here we go again!

But, in the Phillie 8th they get two runs in a very strange way. One run scores conventionally, but when Jorge Julio came in to pitch for the Rockies it got crazy. Julio commits a balk, a walk, 2 consecutive wild pitches, and another walk with another run scoring for the Phils in the mess to make the score 6-3, Phils lead.

They ended up needing every one of those runs, as the Rockies get two (almost three)runs in the 9th. After Garrett Atkins walks to load the bases off of Antonio Alfonseca, he hits Troy Tulowitski with a pitch and give Troy an RBI the painful way as a run scores. Next batter Brad Hawpe zings one to right, runner on thrid scores. Atkins tried to score from second to tie the game, and Shane Victorino's throw home is right on the mark and he nails Atkins at the plate. Cory Sullivan flies out, game over and Phillies win!!

The Philadelphia Phillies ended a long winless drought and nipped the Colorado
Rockies 6 to 5 at Coors Field in a hard fought contest.

Jamie Moyer(6-7) gave Philadelphia a solid outing. He allowed 9 hits and 2
walks in 7 innings lowering his ERA to 4.53. Colorado threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.

Antonio Alfonseca gained credit for his 4th save. Rodrigo Lopez(4-5) suffered
the loss. He was knocked around by Philadelphia, allowing 10 hits and 2
walks in 7 innings.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Moyer said,
'this was one of those times.'

July 7, 2007 Red Sox 3, Tigers 0

Kason Gabbard and Hideki Okajima combine on the three-hit shutout as the Sox whitewash the Tigers. Gabbard gets one of the best starts for a Sox starter this season, allowing only 3 Tiger hits while reeling off 10 strikeouts. The Red Sox broke a scoreless tie in the 8th inning on a Manny RBI single, and get two insurance runs in the 9th on RBI singles for Alex Cora and Coco Crisp.

Gabbard pitches into the 8th until allowing his third hit with two out, and Okajima finishes up for his 4th save of the year to give Papelbon a much deserved break after Paps went 3 innings in yesterday's 13 inning affair.

Kason Gabbard reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts at Comerica Park as the
Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers by the count of 3 to 0.

Gabbard(2-0) was virtually untouchable. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and
1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.00 to 3.51. Boston
had 8 hits for the game and Detroit had 3.

Hideki Okajima earned his 4th save. Jason Grilli(4-6) absorbed the loss in
relief. Gabbard was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a
little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and
a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just
strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'

July 6, 2007 Rockies 10, Phillies 4

In a game that was nowhere near as close as it may look, Jeff Francis of the Rockies keeps the Phillies in check for 8 innings only allowing 4 hits and whiffing 14 for the game. Finally, down 10-0, the Phillies get to a tiring Francis in the 9th as they load the bases and Wes Helms smokes a grand slam homerun to spoil the shutout. By then, it was way too late.

The outfield defense played a big role in keeping it close until the Rockies busted the game open in the 7th, keeping five more runs off the board. Aaron Rowand threw out a runner at home, saved a 3-run homer, and Shane Victorino also threw out a runner at the plate. The score would have been much worse otherwise.

This marks the 9th consecutive loss for the Phillies, but the entire time they have stayed out of last place in the NL East. At the same time of the Phils losing streak, the Washington Nationals were losing 10 straight! The Nats broke their 10 game slide with a win today over the Brewers, as the Phils are now only one game out of last and the worst record in the National League. The Detroit Tigers have baseball's worst record at 29-55, and are currently playing the Red Sox!

Francis(6-6) was very good in the win. He allowed only 7 hits and 1 walk in 8
and 2/3 innings. Colorado ended up with 17 hits for the game while
Philadelphia had 8.

Kyle Kendrick(1-3) was given the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 4

his good stuff out there tonight. The fans really get into it when the
strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more
adrenalin.'

Manny Ramirez slams 2 homeruns on the day for the Sox, but the homerun that made the difference is a one out walk-off 3-run homer for the Tigers by Ivan Rodriguez in the bottom of the 13th inning off Mike Timlin to give Detroit the victory in a shootout.

Ivan Rodriguez hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI at Comerica Park as the
Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox in 13 innings by the count of 11 to
8.

The score was tied at 8 after nine. Detroit came out the victor in the 13th
inning. After an out was recorded, Carlos Guillen started the attack as he
stroked a one-base hit. Sean Casey came to the plate and slapped a base-hit.
One out later, Rodriguez came to the plate and lost the ball over the fence
for three runs (his 9th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for
Detroit and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Detroit
banged out 15 hits on the night.

Jason Grilli(4-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Mike Timlin(2-2) was the loser in relief.

July 5, 2007 Red Sox 12, Devil Rays 5

The Sox put the whippin' on the Rays, slamming 5 homeruns off Rays starter J. P. Howell. Two for David Ortiz, and one each for Varitek, Manny and Eric Hinske. The Sox also rip 5 doubles, for 10 of their 16 hits for extra bases. Everybody except JD Drew helped out of offense today, capped by Papi's 3 for 4, 6 RBI day.

Josh Beckett whiffs 13 for his team leading 8th win of the year, as the Sox score in 7 of the 8 innings that they batted in. Overall, a thrashing!

Designated hitter David Ortiz ripped 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Josh Beckett
struck out 13 batters as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
by a score of 12 to 5 at Fenway Park.

Ortiz punished Tampa Bay with his bat. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st
inning, ripped a solo home run (his 20th of the season) in the 3rd inning and
doubled resulting in a run in the 7th inning. The Boston offense poured it
on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

The victory was credited to Beckett(8-4) who went 7 innings, allowing 5 runs.
J.P. Howell(2-4) took the loss. He gave up 9 runs in 5 innings and saw his
ERA jump from 5.23 to 6.75.

When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Beckett offered, 'The fan's
really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout totals up
there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight - of course, it
would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

July 4, 2007 Astros 6, Phillies 0

The Phillies are done in for their 8th straight loss by Chris Sampson, Lance Berkman and some sloppy defense. Sampson throws the shutout, tossing the 4-hitter at the Phils. Lance Berkamm gets the games first runs with a 2-run homer as part of a 3-run 3rd for the Astros, and has a 4 for 4 day at the plate.

And to make matters worse, Jimmy Rollins throws a sure inning-ending double play ball over Chase Utley's head in the 8th for a two base error and lets a run score, and Wes Helms also commits an error later in the inning for another run. All three runs that Ryan Madson allowed in the 9th were unearned.

Sampson(7-8) dominated Philadelphia hitters. He was stingy on the mound,

4.89. Houston finished with 10 hits in the victory.

Cole Hamels(4-9) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 8
hits and 1 walk.

July 4, 2007 Devil Rays 10, Red Sox 5

The Rays end the Sox 6 game winning streak, with a lot of help from Doug Mirabelli. Not only does Mirabelli go 0 for 4 and whiffs 4 times, he commits two costly mistakes in the field that until the 9th inning was the difference in the game. In the 4th after a Dustan Mohr triple, Mirabelli passes his balls (lol) and lets Mohr trot home when he can't handle a Wake knuckler, which at the time tied the game 3-3.

Next inning, good ol' Dougie strikes again. With one out, he drops a Carlos Pena easy foulout for an error, giving Pena new life and he walks. Greg Norton then flies out for what should have been the third out of the inning, but thanks to the dropped foulout it is only out number two. Next batter Delmon Young rips one over the wall for the 2-run blast, giving Tampa the lead that they would never relinquish.

Tim Wakefield's pitching didn't help either, 8 hits and 7 runs (only 4 earned) with 5 walks in 5 1/3. Manny Declarmen, after only allowing 4 hits and one run in almost 12 innings so far, picks a bad time to suck and allows a Ty Wiggington 3-run homer to make the lead 6 runs and take Dougie off the hook.

David Ortiz is the bright spot on offense for the Sox, with a 2-run homer and RBI double.

July 3, 2007 Red Sox 9, Devil Rays 5 (10)

I goy so excited after this one I forgot to blog after the game, and had to go into the box scores for it!

The first meeting of the year between the Sox and Rays, kind of surprising since they are divisional opponents and play 19 times during the season and the season is already half over. Just the kind of game you would expect with Scott Kazmir and Dice-K doing battle - 22 strikeouts between the two, 11 for each. Unfourtunately, both teams game out swinging and 20 hits and 10 runs allowed between the two pitchers leads to a 5-5 tie after the regulation 9 innings.

The fun was in the Sox 10th. As you can see by the score, they won by 4 runs and the game is in Fenway. Now what does that tell you, as how can you get four runs on one swing? This is how: Kevin Youkilis leads off with a single, and a Mike Lowell single puts Youk at third, 90 feet from the win. Jason Varitek walks (unintentional) to load the bases, with the only runner that matters is Youk at third. I give Jacoby Ellsbury the first chance to play hero in his young career, pinch-hitting for Wily Mo Pena, but he can't capitalize on the chance and pops out. Julio Lugo is due up next, but JD Drew comes in to pinch hit. The pitch....and there it goes, a blast over the right field fence for the walk-off grand salami!! Sox win 9-5!

This was Drew's second grand slam of the year, and one by Coco Crisp earlier in the year for Sox grand slams so far this season.
