April 2, 2007 Braves 7, Phillies 2 (Phillies home opener)

John Smoltz spoils the Phillies season opener at home by striking out 11, only allowing 6 hits and going the distance. The Braves led from the beginning and did all their damage off starter Brett Myers, with Brian McCann's 3-run homer in the first inning and some sloppy fielding leading to four unearned runs in the 4th. Myers will only get 3 starts before going to the bullpen, and be the stopper for the majority of the season as he had over 20 saves during the real season.

John Smoltz dominated striking out 11 Philadelphia batters as the Atlanta
Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 2 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Smoltz(1-0) was tremendous on the mound for Atlanta. He allowed just 6 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.

Brett Myers(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Atlanta,
allowing 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. Smoltz, when asked about
his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I
get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand,
since we won it feels great!'
