| John Smoltz spoils the Phillies season opener at home by striking out 11, only allowing 6 hits and going the distance. The Braves led from the beginning and did all their damage off starter Brett Myers, with Brian McCann's 3-run homer in the first inning and some sloppy fielding leading to four unearned runs in the 4th. Myers will only get 3 starts before going to the bullpen, and be the stopper for the majority of the season as he had over 20 saves during the real season. |

John Smoltz dominated striking out 11 Philadelphia batters as the Atlanta
Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 2 at Citizen's Bank
Park.
Smoltz(1-0) was tremendous on the mound for Atlanta. He allowed just 6 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.
Brett Myers(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Atlanta,
allowing 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. Smoltz, when asked about
his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I
get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand,
since we won it feels great!'
