August 19, 2007 Pirates 14, Phillies 8

The Phils cannot get past the huge day for the Pirates' Adam Laroche as they lose the slugfest. Laroche goes 5 for 5, knocking in 7 runs. A 3-run double, 2-run homer, two RBI singles amnd another single doomed the Phils. A tight but wild game at first, the Phillies would come back and tie the game three separate times until the Pirates bust it open for good in the 7th inning.

Philadelphia Phillies 14 to 8.

Laroche was a one-man wrecking crew. He blasted a two-run home run (his 23rd
of the season) in the 1st inning, stroked a single in the 3rd inning, slapped
a base-hit bringing in a run in the 4th inning, laced a one-base hit
resulting in a run in the 6th inning and doubled plating all three
baserunners in the 7th inning. The Pittsburgh offense was great, scoring in
7 of the 9 innings.

The winning pitcher was John Grabow(3-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Yoel Hernandez(1-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'I felt great out
there today' Laroche said. 'I was seeing the ball perfectly, and I was right
on it with my swing.

First baseman Adam Laroche had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 5 to 2 at PNC Park.

The game started off with Pittsburgh taking the lead in the first as they
scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. Pittsburgh had 14 hits overall, while
Philadelphia had 10.

Paul Maholm(6-10) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing
2 runs. Franquelis Osoria earned the save, his 1st. The loss was charged to
Jamie Moyer(9-11).

With this win, Pittsburgh has a 50-71 record. They have been 3-7 lately.
Philadelphia will hope that this loss is only a 'blip' on their recent 8-2
run - and not a start of a new trend.

August 18, 2007 Red Sox 6, Angels 0

Two stars of the game today, one on offense and one on the mound. Jason Varitek is the star batter today, knocking in 5 of the 6 Sox run with a 2 for 3 day including a 3-run bomb in the 1st inning, a 2-run double in the 8th, and a walk.

On the mound, Curt Schilling has his best start of the season. Chone Figgins led off the game with a single, and for the longest time it looked like Schilling might possibly get the most agonizing of one-hitters with a leadoff single as the only hit. Casey Kotchman would single in the 8th to make that a moot point, and thanks to a fairly low pitch count Schill goes the distance for the 2-hitter.

Side note: The sure-fielding Red Sox commit two errors for the second game in a row, although none today led to any unearned runs. Kevin Youkilis made one as he spelled Mike Lowell at third base today, and the other by Eric Hinske who was at first base due to Youk playing third!

Another notch added to the winning streak, now up to 8 games, as the battle of Pennsylvania today goes to the boys from the City of Brotherly Love. The Phillies are in control from the onset, scoring 5 runs in the 1st inning giving Tom Gorzelanny the very early hook. The Pirates try to get back in the game, scoring 2 in the 7th when JD Durbin runs out of gas and they get 2 more in the bottom of the 9th on a Nate McClouth 2-run homer off Tom Gordon, but too little too late.

At PNC Park the seemingly unstoppable Philadelphia Phillies outscored the
Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 4.

Philadelphia set the tone of the game in the first inning when they scored 5
runs on 5 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for J.D. Durbin(3-0)
and Philadelphia. That was all the run support Durbin required.
Philadelphia ended up with 13 hits for the game while Pittsburgh had 10.

Tom Gorzelanny(11-9) was tagged with the loss. Philadelphia extended their
winning streak to 8 games.

August 17, 2007 Red Sox 8, Angels 6

Most of the scoring was early, as the Sox take game two of the doubleheader. Neither starter is very effective, with Angels starter Ervin Santana knocked out of the game in the 3rd inning after a Mike Lowell grand slam gives the Sox the 7-3 lead. Josh Beckett also strugled, allowing 6 runs in the first 4 innings as the Angels get back in the game, but manages to go 6 and gets the win. Thanks to some shoddy Sox defense, Beckett's ERA didn't take much of a hit as only one run was earned.

Manny Declarmen pitches a solid 7th and 8th allowing one hit, and Papelbon delivers in the 9th for save number 34.

Clay Buchholz's major league debut doesn't go quite as well as he would have liked, although no run support will kill anybody, in game one of a doubleheader between the American League's two best teams. Maybe a bit of nervousness, as he committed an error which led to a run and allowed two others. Meanwhile, John Lackey is a steamroller, having just pitched two straight shutouts and gunning for a third. The Sox get one hit off Lackey as he goes 7 shutout innings, a Coco Crisp single with two outs in the 5th. A Manny single in the 9th is the only other Sox hit, and the Halos get the win.

Lackey in his last 7 starts: 7-0, two shutouts, and an ERA of 0.98.

Washington Nationals, thy name is suckass. The streaking Phillies win their 7th straight, sweeping the Nats and sending them into a tie with the Detroit Tigers for baseball's worst record. The Phils shut out the Nats for the second straight day, with Cole Hamels going the distance in a less than 100 pitch 3-hitter. Hamels seems to finally found his groove after his season long struggles, winning his 3rd straight start.

The Nationals could do nothing all game, only once getting a runner as far as second base, and that was only because Jimmy Rollins threw a sure out into the dugout for the two base error. The Phillies meanwhile, get a 2-run blast for Ryan Howard and a 2-run shot for Jayson Werth in the 4th inning for four runs, and an Aaron Rowand RBI single adds another run in the 8th.

Cole Hamels held Washington scoreless on just 3 hits as the red-hot
Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 5 to
0 at RFK STADIUM.

Hamels(8-10) simply dominated Washington. He allowed just 3 hits and 2 walks
in 9 innings. Philadelphia rapped out 9 hits for the night.

Joel Hanrahan(0-2) was hit with the loss. Manny Acta was obviously impressed
with the pitching of Hamels, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there
tonight. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for
him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'

August 15, 2007 Phillies 2, Nationals 0

Kyle Kendrick is dominant, scattering 4 hits and at one point retiring 15 straight Nats. Felipe Lopez, if he was more of a power hitter, would have tied the game in the 8th but only got a single because of his W rating. Brett Myers comes in at that point, promptly picks Lopez off first base for the final out of the 8th, and goes a 1-2-3 9th for the save for the second straight day. Tim Redding is no slouch for the Nationals striking out 9 and only allowing one run through 6, but is saddled with the tough luck loss.

The two Phillie runs scored in the 3rd inning and the 9th. In the 3rd Jimmy Rollins singles, Tadahito Iguchi sends Rollins to 3rd with a hit and run, and Aaron Rowand beats out a double play as Rollins scores. There ware no outs, so even if the doubleplay had happened Rollins would have scored anyway. The other run came in the 9th on a Greg Dobbs solo homerun for a little breathing room. Dobbs had just came into the game as part of a double switch in the 8th when Myers came in to pitch.

6th straight win for the Phillies as their recent 10-2 run gives them their best record since April 22, when they were 5-12. They have historically always been slow starters in my SOM, but never this slow for this long. Once Chase Utley and Shane Victorino come back from injuries, the comeback should begin I hope.

In a game for the baseball purist, Kyle Kendrick(6-4) and Tim Redding(3-2)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Philadelphia Phillies finally emerged
victorious over Washington Nationals, 2 to 0.

Kendrick was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much,
just 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA from 3.64 to
3.27. Philadelphia out-hit Washington for the game, 8 hits to 4.

Brett Myers gained credit for his 7th save. With the win, Philadelphia
continued their winning ways; their streak now stands at 6 games and
counting.

August 15, 2007 Devil Rays 6, RedSox 5 (10)

This game was almost identical to last game, except for the final score. Players not making contact with the ball, with 15 walks (10 for Rays pitchers) and 24 strikeouts (17 for the Sox) combined, 11 LOB for Tampa and 12 for the Sox, and another comeback. Only this time, the Rays comeback also.

Unheralded Tampa shortstop Ben Zobrist plays the role of hero, with his 2-run homerun off Daisuke Matsuzaka in the 5th giving the Devil Rays the 4-3 lead Rays lead. An insurance run scores for Tampa in the top of the 9th to make the score 5-3, with Al Reyes coming in for the Sox 9th. The boys from Beantown answer back, with JD Drew smoking one into the seats on a 2-run blast to tie the game up at 5 apiece.

However this time, Tampa gets the edge as Zobrist strikes again with a bases loaded single off Hideki Okajima in the top of the 10th for the 6-5 Tampa lead, and Reyes puts the Sox down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the win and the unusual distinction of a blown save and a win in the same game.

35,972 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays
topped the Boston Red Sox by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.

The score was tied at 5 after nine. Tampa Bay won it in the 10th inning.
After an out was recorded, Brendan Harris ripped a base-knock. Jonny Gomes
followed and he doubled. Dioner Navarro then was walked intentionally to
load the bases. Ben Zobrist was up next and he slapped a one-base hit
scoring the run. Boston was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the
10th.

Al Reyes(5-3) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings. The losing pitcher was
Hideki Okajima(6-7) in relief. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning.

August 14, 2007 Phillies 6, Nationals 5

The Phils give the Nationals a taste of their own medicine, as 2 days after that dramatic Nationals comeback in the 9th over Arizona the Phils pull two comebacks of their own in downing the Nats. The Nationals struck first in the 5th inning, getting the 2-0 lead on a Felipe Lopez RBI single and a Ronnie Belliard sac fly. The Phillies get the first comeback in the top of the 6th, scoring 3 runs basically without a hit helping as Shawn Hill falls apart.

Two singles, a wild pitch and a hit batter load the bases for the Phillies. Jayson Werth gets an RBI the painful way as he gets hit by a pitch, a walk to Carlos Ruiz knocks another run across, and pitcher Kyle Lohse tries a squeeze which he beats out for technically a single and the 3-2 Phillie lead, knocking Hill from the game. Hill for the inning - 3 hits, walk, wild pitch and two hit batters.

The Nationals appear to put the game away in the bottom of the 8th as a Ryan Church 2-run single and an RBI single for Nook Logan get three runs off Clay Condrey and give the Nats the lead back at 5-3, but it doesn't last. Chris Schroder went the 7th and 8th innings unscored upon, so he stayed in for the 9th. But, after a single to Iguchi and a Pat Burrell walk, Ryan Howard flexes the muscles ripping a Jon Rauch pitch into the seats for a 3-run smash and the 6-5 Phillie lead. Brett Myers goes the 9th unscated, and 6-5 is the funal.

This is the 5th straight win for the Phillies, now their longest winning streak of the season.

Ryan Howard connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at RFK STADIUM as the
Philadelphia Phillies staged a comeback win over the Washington Nationals by
the count of 6 to 5.

Philadelphia came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 3
runs using 2 hits. Tadahito Iguchi kicked off the action when he slapped a
single. Pat Burrell came next and he drew a walk. Howard then lost the ball
over the fence for three runs (his 33rd of the season). Philadelphia rapped
out 10 hits for the night.

Antonio Alfonseca(3-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Brett
Myers gained credit for his 6th save. Jon Rauch(4-6) took the loss in
relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 1 hit and no walks.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Howard said. 'If you just
keep trying good things can happen!'

August 14, 2007 Red Sox 6, Devil Rays 3

The two teams swapped the lead until the bottom of the 5th, when the Sox bust it open on a Jason Varitek 2-run triple and a Coco Crisp RBI single for three runs, which would prove to be the deciding runs as neither team scored from there. A surprising 6-3 final, as the two teams combined for 21 hits and 16 walks, but runners left of base killed both teams today with the Rays leaving 11 on base including the bases loaded in the 1st and 2nd innings, while the Sox leave 15 runners stranded, also twice with the bases loaded.

Not Jon Lester's greatest start with 7 hits allowed and 5 walks in 5 innings, but he will get his first win of the season. Julian Tavares goes 2 2/3 of dominant long relief until allowing two straight hits in the 8th, at which point Mr. Closer Jonathan Papelbon enters and shuts down the Rays for save number 33.

To go along with the 16 walks combined, the teams also combined for 21 strikeouts! Almost sounds like a start for Nolan Ryan back in the 1970s.

Jason Varitek had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the potent Boston Red Sox defeated
the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6 to 3 at Fenway Park.

Boston brought 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning when
they had 3 base hits. Mike Lowell led off and he drew a walk. Kevin
Youkilis next to the plate and he drew a walk. Varitek then tripled scoring
two baserunners. Coco Crisp came up and he smacked a single scoring the
final run of the inning. Overall Boston out-hit Tampa Bay 12 to 9.

Jon Lester(1-2) allowed 3 runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Lester
got help from Jonathan Papelbon who earned his 33rd save. Grant Balfour(0-2)
was given the loss in relief.

The Boston ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 73-46. With the
loss, Tampa Bay has a record of 5-5 lately, 59-60 overall.

August 13, 2007 Devil Rays 3, Red Sox 1

With not quite the drama of this year's ALCS and even with Kevin Youkilis getting half of the Sox hits with a 4 for 4 day, the Sox fall to Tampa. The Devil Rays (still had the devil in them last season lol) get all the runs that they need in the first inning on a Delmon Young bases loaded single which plates 2 runs. Youk scores the Sox lone run coming home on a Mike Lowell RBI single in the 4th, and the Rays get a run in the 5th off of a Tim Wakefield wild pitch to complete the scoring.

Carl Crawford had a big day on the Tampa side, going 4 for 5 and stealing two bases. Ten teams have less steals than Crawford's total of 45 for the year so far. Most amazing of all, Crawford has only been caught stealing once all season! Both Coco Crisp with 24 and Julio Lugo with 20 from the Sox have more steals each than the entire St. Louis Cardinals team (only 19!)
