September 7, 2007 Phillies 8, Marlins 7 (11)

The Phillies blow the lead twice, but end up the eventual winners and try to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. The Marlins take a one run lead in the 8th which the Phillies retake the one run lead in the bottom of the frame. Brett Myers gets his 8th blown save of the year as the Marlins retie the game in the top of the 9th, and the Phillies finally come through victorious in the 11th.

Ryan Howard singles but overruns first and is thrown out. Aaron Rowand rips a single, and Greg Dobbs gets another single with Rowand trying for third. Jeremy Hermedia throws the ball over third base, and Rowand comes home with the winning run.

it in the 11th inning. Ryan Howard lined a one-base hit. Aaron Rowand was

September 7, 2007 Orioles 4, Red Sox 2

A scoreless pitchers duel between Jon Lester and Daniel Cabrera until the Orioles 6th, when a double for Melvin Mora plates two runners. Cabrera almost gets the shutout, but a 2-run homerun with two out in the 9th for JD Drew puts the Sox on the board (after they were held scoreless for 17 straight innings). Radhames Liz retires Jason Varitek on groundout for his first save.

In other league news, the Angels win today to knock their magic number down to one. The next Angels win or White Sox loss will give the Angels the AL West title. Being already September 7th, they will not set or tie the record but a clinch tomorrow (the 8th) will tie them with the 99 Indians for the earliest in AL history. The 75 Reds Sept. 7th date will still stand as the record.

In a good matchup it was the Baltimore Orioles 4, the Boston Red Sox 2 at
Camden Yards.

Daniel Cabrera(11-12) earned his pay with a solid performance for Baltimore.
He went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 4 walks. The game was a
scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Cabrera got help from Radhames Liz who was credited with his 1st save. Jon
Lester(2-3) was given the loss. He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings giving up 3
hits and 3 walks.

September 6, 2007 Orioles 8, Red Sox 0

The Red Sox can't get anything going against the O's today, as Garrett Olsen and Rocky Chery (what a name!!) combine on the shutout. Tim Wakefield's somewhat dissapointing season continues as he gets loss number 13, now with an ERA over 5 and a half.

I even just checked, and Rocky is his real first name. Full name: Rocky Ty Cherry.

September 5, 2007 Nationals 11, Marlins 0

Hanley Ramirez led off the game with a single, and that would be all the Marlins would get as Tim Redding holds them hitless the rest of the way and gets the one-hit shutout. Next to a no-hitter being broken up in the 9th inning, this has to be the second most agonizing way to get a one-hitter and not a no-hitter.

Austin Kearns provides a lot of the offense with a 4 for 4 day, including a grand slam, and the Nationals rip the Fish.

Tim Redding was on top of his game, blanking Florida on just 1 hit and Austin
Kearns had 4 hits as the Florida Marlins were badly beaten by the Washington

It was a good day for Washington thanks to Kearns. He banged out a single in

and hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates (his 13th of the
season) in the 7th inning. Washington finished with 13 hits in the victory.

Redding(5-2) was credited with the shutout. Sergio Mitre(8-9) absorbed the
loss. He allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.

September 5, 2007 Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3

Jason Varitek breaks a 2-all tie with a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 7th as the Sox get the win. Your classic team pitching today, as Curt Schilling goes 7 solid innings, someone goes the 8th (today it was Manny Declarmen, who did allow a run) and Jonathan Papelbon goes the 9th. The save for Paps gives him 40 for the season, but still a second place total in the AL behind the 45 for the White Sox's Bobby Jenks.

With the loss, the Blue Jays drop out of the wild card lead as the New York Yankees now lead the wild card race by 1/2 game.

September 5, 2007 Braves 7, Phillies 3

Braves starter Tim Hudson gets win number 19 as the Braves eliminate the Phillies from division title contention, winning their 8th straight as well as handing the Phils their 5th straight loss. The Phils finally gets 3 runs across via a Jimmy Rollins RBI double and a Chase Utley 2-run double to break the shutout in the 9th.

On top of the who's hot list is Ryan Howard. Howard's last 10 days have featured a .462 average to go along with 8 homeruns and 18 RBI, which unfourtunately has not translated to victories for the Phillies. With 23 games left on the schedule, the Phillies sit 19 behind the wildcard leading New York Mets, and will face them to begin their 11 game road trip starting on the 14th. Might not matter by then, as seven games are between now and then.

September 4, 2007 Braves 5, Phillies 4

Despite outhitting the Braves 14-9 and including Ryan Howard's 45th homer of the year, the Phils fall one short in the column that matters - runs.. One big reason is that the Phillies hit into four doubleplays. Another reason is that these teams are going in opposite directions - this is the 7th straight win for the Braves, and the 4th straight loss for the Phillies.

If the Phillies lose to the Braves tomorrow, they will be eliminated from the division race. Speaking of division races, the Angels magic number is down to 4. Still a chance for the Angels to beat the Sept. 7th record by the '75 Reds for the earliest division title clinch date.

Rafael Soriano stopped Philadelphia cold and Chipper Jones had 2 base hits and
2 RBI as the red-hot Atlanta Braves topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a
score of 5 to 4 at Turner Field.

Jose Ascanio(1-0) got the win with a steady relief outing. He went 2 innings
surrendering 3 hits and 1 walk. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.

Soriano got the save, his 22nd. Geoff Geary(1-6) suffered the loss in relief.
Gary Lucas was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

September 4, 2007 Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1

Josh Beckett and Roy Halladay square off in a classic pitchers duel, both holding the other team scoreless until finally the Sox get 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th on a Dustin Pedroia 2-run bases loaded single. Neither team had a runner reach second base until the top of the 8th inning.

The Sox end up needing both of those runs as after Beckett pitches 8 innings of scoreless ball and hands a chance at win number 16 to Jonathan Papelbon, Paps does allow the Jays a run on a Troy Glaus solo homer to break the shutout, but gets save number 39 anyway. Halladay gets the tough luck loss.

Side note - Josh Beckett has not lost a game since June 19th, 2 1/2 months ago, winning his last 9 decisions covering 13 starts. Four starts left, and four wins from 20.

In a game for the baseball purist, Josh Beckett(16-4) and Roy Halladay(11-7)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Boston Red Sox finally emerged
victorious over Toronto Blue Jays, 2 to 1.

Boston came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring
2 runs. After two were out Coco Crisp started the rally when he drew a walk.
Crisp took off for second and slid in with a stolen base. Jacoby Ellsbury
then was walked intentionally. Julio Lugo followed and he drew a walk to
load the bases. Dustin Pedroia came to the plate and ripped a base-knock
knocking home two runners. Pedroia took second on the throw. The teams had
been locked in a scoreless duel until the 8th inning.

Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 39th. The Boston ballclub's record now
stands at a division leading 84-55. With the loss Toronto now has a record
of 74-64.

Left fielder Matt Stairs went deep and had 4 RBI at Fenway Park where the
Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 13 to 9.

Stairs was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day
at their team's expense. He clubbed a three-run home run (his 17th of the
season) in the 4th inning and doubled plating a run in the 6th inning.
Toronto managed 15 hits in their victory.

Jesse Litsch(8-3) was the winner allowing 6 runs in 6 innings. Daisuke
Matsuzaka(13-6) was tagged with the loss. He allowed Toronto 6 runs in 5
innings of work.

September 3, 2007 Braves 7, Phillies 2

Once again, an early lead is wasted. Rob Barajas and Chase "World Fuckin' Champions!!" Utley both hit solo homers for a 2-0 Phillie lead, which is promptly erased on a 2-run homerun for Yunel Escobar in the 5th. The 2-2 tie lasted until the bottom of the 7th inning.

Jamie Moyer, not pitching too bad up to that point, I let bat in the top of the 7th not wanting to go to the suckass bullpen. However, the Braves get to Moyer in the bottom of the 7th and take the 5-2 lead with a litle help from Pat Burrell thrown in. Despite Burrell's torrid bat as of late, his fielding hasn't improved a damn bit as he commits his 13th (!) error of the season which allows one of the runs in the inning to score. Atlanta adds 2 more in the 8th, and 7-2 is the final.

Now 13 seems like an awfully high number of errors for an outfielder in a season, and in the real season Burrell did have 10. Quite a few times, it has seemed like late in the game Burrell has made an error which has somehow led to a run and the difference between a win and a loss. I have replaced him defensively numerous times, but in a close game you want his bat in the lineup. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Just one of the reasons that the Phillies are doing nowhere near as well as they should be.

September 2, 2007 Marlins 7, Phillies 5

Once again, a sure win is turned into a loss. It is just unbelievable how this keeps happening. Absolutely un-fucking-believable. Just beyond explanation.

The Phils enter the bottom of the 9th with a 2-run lead, leading 5-3. Brett Myers had come on to pitch in the 8th due to the recent bullpen woes to try for the two inning save, and strikes out the side with a single stuffed in. Myers walks Hanley Ramirez to lead off the 9th, and Dan Uggla flies out. A walk to Jeremy Hermedia and a single for Miguel Cabrera load the bases for the Marlins as the tying run at second and winning run is at first. Mike Jacobs strikes out for out number two, everything looks fine. Next batter, Cody Ross, gets a hold of a VERY bad pitch by Myers and laces it over the wall for the walk-off Grand Slam, and the agony continues.

Lost in the shuffle of the bullpen woes are the spectacular runs for Pat Burrell and Ryan Howard as of late. Over the last 13 games, Burrell is hitting at a .469 clip, to go along with 8 homeruns and 25 RBI with 19 of them over the last 8 games. Howard is right up there with him, hitting .415 and even better power numbers than Burrell with 10 homeruns and 25 RBI over the same 13 games., including the 3 homer game yesterday.

The next three games for the Phils are against the first place Atlanta Braves, and they will decide the season although it already seems that the Phillies will be on the outside looking in come playoff time. You never know, though.

Mike Jacobs hit 3 doubles at Dolphins Stadium as the Florida Marlins staged a
comeback win over the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 7 to 5.

Florida scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning when they
scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Cody Ross
who made the crowd come alive when he launched a rocket-shot out of the park
for a Grand Slam homerun (his 12th of the season). Florida had 14 hits
overall, while Philadelphia had 10.

Kevin Gregg(6-8) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Brett
Myers(4-6) was hit with the loss in relief. Despite the loss, he struckout 4
Florida batters in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Fredi Gonzalez was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when
asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he
volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Gary
Lucas, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come
up on the short end of one of these!'

Two big hits in the game, a 2-run homer for Mike Lowell and a 2-run triple for Brandon Moss plus a nice 3 for 4 day for Alex Cora propel the Sox to the victory. Nice solid start for Jon Lester, and Papelbon gets save number 38.

September 1, 2007 Marlins 11, Phillies 10

A monster day for Ryan Howard is wasted, as the Phillies troublesome bullpen sucks the joint out again. First, Howard. 5 for 5 on the day, 3 homeruns and knocks in 5 runs as he becomes the 14th occurence of a player hitting 3 homers in a game this season. 12 players have done it, as Howard also did it back in June and Alfonso Soriano of the Cubs has also hit three homers in a game twice this season.

Second, the bullpen. With Howard's three homers, that helps to put the Phillies out in front 8-0. Starter JD Durbin does allow the Marlins 3 of those runs back in the 6th, and hands the 8-3 lead over to the pen for the 7th inning. Clay Condrey cannot retire a batter, allowing 5 straight singles with all 5 scoring and JC Romero is no help allowing a 3-run homerun for a total of 8 runs in the inning for the Marlins turning an 8-3 defecit into an 11-8 lead. The Phils do get two back in the 8th, but go down 1-2-3 in the 9th.

Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11 to 10.

Florida scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning when they had 7 base
hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Wood who elicited a roar from the
hometown fans when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 3rd of the season).
Philadelphia had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Logan Kensing(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Kevin Gregg
recorded the save, his 25th. J.C. Romero(1-4) was charged with the loss in
relief. He surrendered 3 runs and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
