May 19, 2007 Blue Jays 5, Phillies 2

It looked good early, as a Shane Victorino homer and Pat Burrell groundout give the Phils two early first inning runs, but they fail to score the remainder of the game against Shaun Marcum. Marcum goes 8 innings, only allowing 3 hits after the first inning. Chase Utley continues to sizzle in the cleanup spot as he is perfect again today for the second straight game, with a single, double and two walks. Utley is batting .339 so far and a .459 OBP since moving to cleanup in Ryan Howard's absence.

May 19, 2007 Braves 6, Red Sox 1

The Sox begin their interleague play against their former cross-town rivals outhitting the NL East leading Braves 9-8, but falling short in the run column in game one of a doubleheader.11 men left on base was the Sox undoing today, as Atlanta made much better use of their hits than the Sox did. Chipper Jones knocked in 4 of the 6 Brave runs with an RBI single in the 3rd and a 3-run double in the 9th which put the game out of reach.

May 18, 2007 Phillies 10, Blue Jays 4

For only the second time since the interleague play began in 1997, there will be no Phillies-Red Sox series. Instead, it is the Toronto Blue Jays in a rematch of the 1993 World Series, 14 years later!!

As for the game itself, it was full of sloppiness on both sides with 3 errors for each team. Chase Utley is perfect on the day falling a triple shy of the cycle (3 for 3, single, 2B, HR) and walking twice while scoring three runs and driving in three. Every Phil starter had at least one hit except for pitcher Jon Lieber, and he walked twice!

With the win, the Phillies have their first at least three game winning streak of the season, and have already won as many games in May so far as they did in the entire month of April!

In a lop-sided win the Philadelphia Phillies ripped the Toronto Blue Jays by a
10 to 4 count.

Chase Utley enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He doubled in the 2nd inning,
cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 6th of the season) in the 3rd
inning and laced a one-base hit plating a run in the 4th inning.
Offensively, Philadelphia was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate
innings.

Jon Lieber(3-1) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Dustin
McGowan(1-2) was tagged with the loss. He was not very effective,
surrendering 6 runs in 5 innings.

May 17, 2007 Diamondbacks 12, Rockies 10

These are the kind of games that the light air of the mile-high city of Denver will produce. The Rockies score 8 runs in the bottom of the 9th on two RBI singles, a 2-run homer and a grand slam to tie the game 10-all, but all for naught as the D-Backs get 2 in the top of the 10th and win the game! Eight homeruns between the two teams for the game.

It was an exciting day game in Coors Field where the Arizona Diamondbacks
finally out-lasted the Colorado Rockies by a score of 12 to 10 in a 10 inning
affair.

Both teams were tied at 10 runs apiece after nine innings. Arizona was
victorious in the 10th inning. Stephen Drew got things going when he
delivered a single. Chris Young next to the plate and he smashed a two-run
homer (his 11th of the season). Although they lost, Colorado did out-hit
Arizona 21 to 17.

Jose Valverde(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Brian Fuentes(1-1) was the loser in relief.

May 17, 2007 Tigers 8, Red Sox 7

OMG, what a game!! The game was a 4-3 Sox lead entering the 9th, and you saw what the final score was. Mr. Automatic Jonathan Papelbon is anything but today, allowing 5 Tiger runs in the 9th inning for his second blown save of the season, and the Tigers lead 8-4. The never say die Sox almost mount the comeback in the bottom of the 9th, scoring 3 and having the tying and winning runs on base with two out. David Ortiz, who was getting the game off, comes in to pinch-hit hoping to duplicate last games heroics. When the dice roll was in the 1 column (Ortiz's hot column) I thought YES!! But, it ended up a 1-12, lineoutmax, to end the game.

I will put the play account in for the wild 9th so you can see it for yourself.

Gary Sheffield went yard and had 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the Detroit Tigers
won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Boston Red Sox by the count
of 8 to 7.

Detroit erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning when
they scored 5 runs on 5 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Sheffield
who helped quiet the crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 9th of the
season). Despite losing, Boston out-hit Detroit 16 to 13.

Fernando Rodney(1-4) went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win.
Rodney got relief help from Todd Jones who gained credit for his 4th save.
The loss was charged to Jonathan Papelbon(0-2) in relief.

'The only way this one could have been better', said Rodney, 'was if we had
played it at home.'

May 17, 2007 Phillies 4, Brewers 3

After losing the first two games of the series, the Phillies salvage a draw in the 4 game set with the win, thanks to Rod Barajas and Pat Burrell. Both had 2 homer days, acccounting for all Phillie runs. Barajas had solo shots in the 3rd and 5th, while Burrell hit his solo bombs in the 4th and the eventual game winner in the 8th.

For Barajas it doubles his homer output for the year to four, and for Burrell it just continues his recent torrid streak. After only having two home runs in April, he has 9 for May so far, 8 of them in the last 10 games!

Also, a surprising 8 strikeouts for Freddy Garcia, who's only problem inning was the 4th inning when the Brewers scored all their runs. Brett Myers seems to be settling into his new role as closer very nicely as he gets his 3rd save with a 1-2-3 9th, two outs via strikeout.

May 17, 2007 Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 (13)

In a game that seemed to take forever (and game one of a doubleheader, nontheless), David Ortiz plays hero. He had a chance in the 10th to win the game, but his smash to right was caught at the wall by Magglio Ordonez. Not to be denied, Papi comes through in the bottom of the 13th with a walk-off homerun to lead off the inning and send the Sox to victory!!

The Boston Red Sox edged the Detroit Tigers in 13 innings at Fenway Park by
the score of 5 to 4.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Boston won the hard fought
contest in the 13th inning. David Ortiz delivered a solo blast (his 9th of
the season) resulting in an exciting win for Boston and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans. Boston and Detroit each finished the
afternoon with 10 hits.

Javier Lopez(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Jason
Grilli(3-3) was given the loss in relief. Boston continued their winnings
ways improving their record to 20-19. They are 8-2 in their last ten games.
Detroit can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a
miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.

May 16, 2007 Phillies 11, Brewers 4

The Phillies light up the scoreboard in the 4th against the 2-7, 9.20 ERA Jeff Suppan for 4 runs with pitcher Cole Hamels helping his own cause with his bat with a 2-run single. Hamels arm was also great today, as only Kevin Mench with 2 homeruns kept him away from a chance at a shutout. The Phils also lit it up against Carlos Villanueva, with four homeruns in two innings, with three of them in the 7th inning. The Brewers did get a couple of runs during garbage time off of Francisco Rosario, but it didn't make a difference in the outcome.

Hamels gets his first win in over a month, and his current 5 losses ties what his actual season total was! Action all up and down the lineup today, with only Hamels not scoring a run, and only Jimmy Rollins (who continues to struggle with the bat) not getting a hit or RBI.

Pat Burrell hit a homerun as the Philadelphia Phillies outscored the Milwaukee
Brewers 11 to 4.

Philadelphia went ahead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they
scored 4 runs on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Cole Hamels who made the
crowd come alive when he lashed a single scoring two baserunners. Overall
Philadelphia out-hit Milwaukee 10 to 7.

Hamels(2-5) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. Jeff Suppan(2-7) was the
losing pitcher. He pitched 5 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 walks.

May 15, 2007 Brewers 10, Phillies 2

What had been a tight 2-2 pitchers duel through 6 betwen Adam Eaton and Claudio Vargas totally fell apart from the 7th inning on for the Phillies, as the Brewers pile 8 runs on over the last 3 innings and win big. After Adam Eaton began to tire in the 7th allowing a single, two doubles and hit a batter his day was done. Geoff Geary again couldn't hold the inherited runners on, and the Brewers get 4 runs in the inning.

But the most embarrasing play I have ever had game in the 9th. With runners on first and third, Tony Gwynn Jr. doubled to left field. The runner on third scores easily, and the runner on first WAS going to stop at third. However Pat Burrell throws the ball past SECOND BASE on the throw back to the infield, allowing the runner on third to score! The play by play said "HOW EMBARRASING!!" in big capital letters. It even said that the throw wasn't over home plate, it was over the infield. First time I have ever seen that happen, and I hope the last.

The Milwaukee Brewers enjoyed a blow-out, pounding the Philadelphia Phillies
pitchers for 10 while Claudio Vargas(4-2)with effective use of the bullpen
surrendered 2 runs to Philadelphia.

Milwaukee tallied 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning with the help of 5 hits.
The key offensive moment was provided by Gabe Gross who deflated the spirits
of the home town crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs.

May 15, 2007 Tigers 4, Red Sox 0

The Sox prove that the old adage holds true - you can't win a game without scoring any runs. Justin Verlander is on top of his game and shuts out the Sox on 5 hits and remains undefeated on the season at 4-0. Tim Wakefield with the loss drops to a dismal 1-5.

May 14, 2007 Brewers 5, Phillies 2

Jamie Moyer coughs up three gopher balls with back to back shots in the 3rd for Rickie Weeks and Joe Hardy, and another blast to Bill Hall in the 4th as the Brew Crew end the Phils modest 2 game winning streak.

Chris Coste got the Phillies first run of the game with a pinch-hit homer in the 6th inning. He also had a pinch-hit double in yesterday's game, which are his only two plate appearances since his callup when Howard went on the DL. Nice 1.000 batting average and 3.000 slugging percentage!

May 14, 2006 Red Sox 7, Tigers 6

In one of the most bizarre finishes to a game I have had, the Red Sox get 5 baserunners in the bottom of the 9th on only two hits and win the game on a walkoff----walk??

Yes, a walkoff walk! Daisuke Matsuzaka has a lousy start as the Tigers score 5 runs in the first two innings and one more in the 6th after Dice-K had settled down some to lead 6-0. The Sox come roaring back, getting 4 in the 6th capped by a Jason Varitek 3-run blast to make the score 6-4. Another run for the Sox in the 7th to trail 6-5, and then comes the bizarre 9th.

Tigers closer Todd Jones had come into the game in the 7th inning, so by the 9th he was getting tired as Kevin Youkilis led off the inning with a single. That was it for Jones, as Fernando Rodney comes in to pitch. Big Papi rips a single as Youkilis goes to second. Manny Ramirez brings his 4 for 4 day to the plate and is hit by a pitch, which loads the bases with no outs. Rodney walk next batter JD Drew as Youk trots home with the tying run. That was it for Rodney (hit, hit batter, walk) as Wil Ledezma tries hit shot at keeping the Sox at bay with Mike Lowell coming to the plate. Ledezma walks Lowell, and Papi trots across home plate for the winning run!!

Sox continue their recent 9-1 run, and have moved into second place in the AL East, 2 1/2 behind the slumping New York Yankees, who have lost four straight.

In a thriller the Boston Red Sox staged a dramatic comeback over the Detroit
Tigers winning by a score of 7 to 6 at Fenway Park.

Boston scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 2
base hits. Kevin Youkilis led off and he singled. David Ortiz came to the
plate and laced a single. Manny Ramirez then was hit by a pitch. J.D. Drew
stepped in and he drew a walk scoring a run. Mike Lowell came to the plate
and drew a walk making Boston the victors to the delight of the home town
faithful. Boston had 13 hits for the night while Detroit had 10.

Kyle Snyder(2-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.
Fernando Rodney(0-4) ended up with the loss in relief. 'Now that is what I
call fun! I just love baseball, especially games like this, of course,' Gary
Lucas offered. 'Everyone at the stadium had a great time - did you see the
fans go wild there at the end?!'

May 13, 2007 Phillies 7, Cubs 6 (11)

It took 11 innings, and the Phillies again blew leads of 5-1 and 6-3, but they come away victorious on a Chase Utley walk-off bases loaded single in the 11th. Utley is filling in admirably for the injured Ryan Howard in the cleanup spot, as in the previous game (unblogged) he had a 2-run double in the bottom of the 8th to give the Phils the win. 4th win in 5 games for the Phillies.

Some very uncharacteristic sloppy fielding by Jimmy Rollins led to the three Cub runs that tied the game in the 8th. Rollins threw one over first to allow a run to score on what should have been the third out, and an Alfonso Soriano singled knocked in two more for three unearned runs. Rollins has been sloppy all season so far in the field, with 7 errors so far. Not like him at all. But he made up for it with a double in the 11th to key the winning rally.

Two more homeruns for Pat Burrell today, giving him 5 in the last 5 games. A big part of the Phils recent winning ways.

Pat Burrell ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
outscored the Chicago (NL) Cubs in 11 innings 7 to 6.

Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia won
the hard fought contest in the 11th inning. After two outs Jimmy Rollins
doubled. Jayson Werth stepped up next and he was walked intentionally.
Aaron Rowand then drew a walk to load the bases. Chase Utley came up and he
lined a single giving Philadelphia the win much to the delight of the home
town crowd. Chicago (NL) had 15 hits in the game while Philadelphia had 10,
but Philadelphia had the more timely hits.

The victory went to Brett Myers(2-3) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. The
losing pitcher was Will Ohman(0-1) in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings
and surrendered 3 hits and 2 walks.

May 13, 2007 Red Sox 9, Orioles 5

Even with the Orioles outhitting the Red Sox 14-10, the Sox get more in the run collumn and come away with the win, their 8th in the last 9 games as they get back to the .500 mark. The left field wall got dinged up today with 12 doubles between the two teams (8 for Baltimore, including 3 for Aubrey Huff). Sox stars included Jason Varitek going 2 for 4 with a 3-run double in the first inning, and Hideki Okajima getting another save with two shutout innings as the Sox busted open a 6-5 game with 3 more runs in the 8th.

A less than stellar start for Josh Beckett, allowing 13 hits and 5 runs in 6 1/3 inning as the Sox blew the early 4-0 lead, but the offense gets the lead back and takes Beckett off the hook and he gets the win.
