November 1, 2007 Angels 2, Braves 0 (Angels win series, 4-3)

With the hometown crowd on their feet throughout the game, the Los Angeles Angels crack open the champagne as World Series Champions with four pitchers combining on a shutout and a thrilling 2-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves and get their second overall world championship in the first ever regularly scheduled World Series game in the month of November.

After much perusal over which Angel would get the start, Jered Weaver is chosen and he is more than up to the task in a tense pitching duel with John Smoltz. The Braves would not get their first hit of the game until one was out in the 4th inning. The Angels got to Smoltz in the 2nd inning, on a Mike Napoli single, Napoli goes to second on a Smoltz wild pitch, and scores the first run of the game when Howie Kendrick knocks him home on a single. Some Smoltz wildness would cost him again in the 5th inning when he hits Orlando Cabrera and Cabrera scores from first on a Garrett Anderson double for the 2-0 Angels lead.

The Braves would mount their only real serious threat of the game in the 6th inning when Weaver began to run a little low in the tank. Willie Harris would walk, but would be caught stealing second. Kelly Johnson singles, and Edgar Renteria walks. Chris Bootcheck comes in at that point and strikes out the red hot Chipper Jones to end the inning as the Braves fail to score. That would pretty much do it for the Braves, as Bootcheck goes the 7th and Darren Oliver the 8th allowing one hit. Renteria leads off the 9th with a double and the meat of the order coming up against Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez proceeds to get Chipper on a groundout, strikes out Mark Teixeira, and gets a groundout from Brian McCann to end the game, then the fans go wild and the celebration begins.

Quite a few baserunning mistakes for both teams besides the Harris caught stealing, as Chipper is picked off first base by Weaver while Chone Figins and Orlando Cabrera are both picked off first by Smoltz. Smoltz goes the distance for the Braves for the complete game only allowing the two runs, but it is not good enough as he gets his first postseason loss. Not exactly the best game to do it in.

As for series MVP, really no obvious choices for batters. This was a pitchers series, as evidenced by the Angels .265 average and the Braves .246. The choice will be John Lackey, as he wins 2 games with an 8 inning, one run performance in game 1 and another one run performance in almost 7 innings in game 4, coming back on three days rest and giving the Angels a much needed win that at the time tied the series 2-2. Now that ain't bad, winning the Cy Young award and World Series MVP honors in the same season!

As I said, these are the 7th and 8th different teams in the four SOM World Series that I have had. No one has more than one appearance in a Series. Also, this would be the first World Series to go the full seven games since 2002, which oddly enough the Angels won that one too!

Next, on to 2008!!!

At Angels Stadium, the Los Angeles(AL) fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Jered Weaver*(2-2) finally bested his Atlanta opposite, John Smoltz(3-1), by
the score of 2 to 0.

Atlanta was unable to claim the lead after Los Angeles(AL) went ahead in the
2nd inning plating an isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. That early run
support was enough for Weaver* and Los Angeles(AL). For the game Los
Angeles(AL) out-hit Atlanta 7 to 4.

Francisco Rodriguez gained credit for his 6th save. Smoltz absorbed the loss.
He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

October 31, 2007 Braves 6, Angels 4 (10) (series tied, 3-3)

So far in the World Series, being the home team hasn't done a lick shit of good!! For the 4th time in the 6 games, the away team wins as the Atlanta Braves get a big 2-run homerun in the top of the 10th inning off the bat of DH Scott Thorman for the 6-4 win in 10 innings in the Halloween Showdown and force a game seven. Sloppy fielding on both sides of the ball lead to three of the 10 runs in the game being unearned.

The Braves opened the scoring first when Edgar renteria scores on a wild pitch by Kelvim Escobar in the 3rd inning for the 1-0 Braves lead. The Angels get the run right back in the bottom of the 3rd when Nathan Haynes singles, goes to second on a balk and is knocked home on a single for Orlando Cabrera to tie the game, 1-1. The Braves take a 2-1 lead in the 5th on a Kelly Johnson homerun, but in the bottom of the 5th Jeff Francoeur drops what should have been the third out allowing the tying run to score for the Angels. 2-2 score.

Francoeur makes up for the error with an RBI single in the 6th, and Brian McCann smokes a solo homerun in the top of the 8th to give the Braves the lead, 4-2. In the bottom of the 8th, Howie Kendrick comes through big in the clutch for the Angels with a 2-run homerun to tie the score again, 4-4.

In the Braves 10th inning, after a bunch of pinch-hitting and running moves for the Angels in the bottom of the 9th to try to get a run home to win the game (the winning run was stranded at third base), Chone Figgins ends up in right field. On the first ball hit to him, he drops the fly for a two-base error and puts Mark Teixiera at second base. A hit batter and doubleplay give the Angels two outs, but then Thorman comes through with the previously mentioned homerun. The Angels go down 1-2-3 against Soriano in the bottom of the 10th.

So, it all comes down to this. The ultimate in excitement, game seven of a World Series, with the winner the champion. John Smoltz will get the start for the Braves, a well-seasoned man in a pressure situation and the winner in game three. For the Angels, the starter is still up in the air. Jered Weaver is scheduled to get the start, but he allowed 12 hits and got the loss in game three against Smoltz. John Lackey may also get the start, coming back on three days rest for the second time in the series. The Angels are still undecided whether to give the ace of staff and Cy Young award winer the start again on three days rest, or go with Weaver and possibly have Lackey come in a little later in the game, say the third or fourth inning. That decision will not be made until game time. One thing for sure - bound to be some excitement!!

Designated hitter Scott Thorman cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Atlanta
Braves outscored the Los Angeles(AL) Angels in 10 innings 6 to 4.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Atlanta won the hard
fought contest in the 10th inning. Mark Teixeira led off and keyed the rally
when he reached on an error. Brian McCann stepped up next and he was hit by
a pitch. Andruw Jones then grounded into a double play. Thorman stepped in
and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 1st of the
season). Atlanta managed 10 hits in their victory.

Rafael Soriano(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and
allowing no runs. Justin Speier(0-1) was the loser in relief. He was the
victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.

Atlanta now has a record of 10-7. With this loss, Los Angeles(AL) has a 5-5

October 29, 2007 Angels 5, Braves 3 (Angels lead series, 3-2)

Ervin Santana makes everyone forget about his previous two disasterous starts, as he goes 7 solid innings striking out 8 and allowing an unearned run as the Angels take game 5 by the score of 5-3 and now sit one win away from a world championship.

Pretty much all Angels today, with Casey Kochman ripping his first homerun of the playoffs, a 2-run shot, to open the scoring in the 2nd inning. The Braves do get one run back in the 3rd on some shoddy defense. A walk and 2 strikeouts has a runner at first when Chipper Jones hits one to right field which Vlad Guerrero drops, which should have been the third out of the inning, to put runners at second and third. Mark Teixeria hits a single to right, runner on third scores, but Vlad comes up throwing and nails Chipper at the plate.

The Angels get another run in the 4th on a Kotchman RBI single, and get two more in the 5th thanks to some shoddy Braves defense. Garrett Anderson and Chone Figgins hit back to back singles for runners at first and third. Figgins tries to steal second base, with the throw by Brian McCann sailing into centerfield as Anderson scores and Figgins ends up at third. Vlad hits a sac fly (by now making up for his error earlier), Angels now lead 5-1.

It would stay that score until the bottom of the 8th, when Justin Speier allows a 2 out, 2-run homer to Chipper Jones (Jones' 3rd of the series and 6th of the playoffs), which closes the gap to 5-3. Francisco Rodriguez comes on for the 9th and retires the Braves in order for his second save in as many games, and an 0.87 ERA for the playoffs overall.

The very happy Angels, as they take two of three in Atlanta, get games six and seven (if necessary) at home after a travel day. A Halloween showdown for game 6, as Tim Hudson will get the call for the Braves and Kelvim Escobar takes the hill for the Angels as the Halos go for the championship.

Game six and seven, scheduled for October 31st and November 1st, will be the lastest scheduled games in World Series history. The 2001 World Series was played between October 27th and November 4th, but that was because of 9/11 and the season got extended a week.

of 5 to 3.

Los Angeles(AL) took the lead for good in the 2nd inning when they scored 2
runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Kotchman who
quieted the home crowd when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his
1st of the season). Francisco Rodriguez, after tossing a perfect ninth, was
credited with his 5th save.

Ervin Santana(1-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Buddy Carlyle(0-3)
took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5
innings.

Los Angeles(AL) now has a record of 10-6. Atlanta has a record of 9-7 after
the loss.

October 28, 2007 Angels 5, Braves 2 (series tied, 2-2)

John Lackey, on three days rest, pitches exactly how you would expect a Cy Young award winner to, holding the Braves scoreless until starting to run out of gas in the 7th inning. It didn't matter by that point, as the Halos had already built up a 5-0 lead. Lackey even helped with the bat, getting a 3rd inning single.

A much different looking Angels lineup with the lefty Chris James on the mound, and it seemed to work. The lineup that the computer manager threw up I just kept, and it scored runs in all kinds of different ways. Garrett Anderson and Erick Aybar hit back-to-back homeruns in the 2nd inning (for Aybar, only his 3rd at-bat of the playoffs!) to put the Angels up 2-0. In the 3rd, singles for Lackey, Orlando Cabrera and Vlad Guerrero knock Lackey home for a run and a 3-0 lead. In the 4th with James gone at this point and Tyler Yates on the mound, Anderson strikes again as he walks, ends up at third on two consecutive groundouts, and scores on a wild pitch for the 4-0 lead.

Not done yet, in the 7th Reggie Willits singles, steals second and third, and is knocked home on a Howie Kendrick single for the 5-0 lead. The Braves finally get to Lackey for a run in the 7th, and with two outs in the 9th Yunel Escobar gets a solo homer off Chris Bootcheck with two outs, and Francisco Rodriguez strikes out Kelly Johnson and gets the save.

Ervin Santana, skipped for this start, will get the start in game 5 for the Angels against the Braves' Buddy Carlyle. Carlyle got the start in game 1 and the tough-luck loss as he only allowed one earned run.

The Los Angeles(AL) Angels defeated the Atlanta Braves by a score of 5 to 2 at
Turner Field.

Los Angeles(AL) had 2 runs cross the plate in the 2nd inning. Los Angeles(AL)

October 27, 2007 Braves 5, Angels 3 (Braves lead series, 2-1)

The Atlanta Braves continue their home dominance in the playoffs, 7-1 now at home, as they get the 5-3 win over the Angels and go up 2 games to 1 in the series. All the scoring today was in the middle innings, with the Angels getting two in the 5th and one in the 7th, while the Braves get one in the 4th and 2 in the 5th and 6th. Chipper Jones slowed down a little only going 1 for 4 and being thrown out at home once, but the two men above him in the order picked up the slack nicely with Kelly Johnson going 2 for 4 while driving in two, and Edgar Renteria having a 3 for 4 day while scoring twice. 22 hits combined between the teams, but a surprisingly low 8 runs.

For game four, Ervin Santana was originally going to start for the Angels but he has not gotten out of the second inning in either of his two playoff starts so far. Now facing a 2-1 series defecit and a hostile Atlanta crowd, desperate times call for desperate measures so the Angels are going all or nothing and will call on Cy Young award winner (and game one winner) John Lackey on only three days rest to try to get them back in the series, while the Braves will counter with Chuck James.

October 25, 2007 Braves 7, Angels 5 (11) (series tied, 1-1)

Chipper Jones of the Braves hasn't slowed down a bit from his co-MVP NLCS performance, as he went 2 for 4 last game and a big 4 for 6 today, with 2 huge hits. Eerie similar to yesterday;s game with a 2-1 Angels lead after 6 innings, but then all hell broke loose after that.

The Braves in the 7th inning get their first lead of the series with a 4 run outburst and a 5-2 lead when Andruw Jones doubles, Willie Harris knocks him in with a triple, Kelly Johnson gets a sac fly to score Harris and Chipper gets big hit #1 of the day, a 2-run homer. It looks like the lead will hold for the Braves, until the bottom of the 9th when what I thought was a shocking move by the Angels manager made him look like a genius.

With Rafael Soriano on the mound, Chone Figgins comes to the plate with one out and after a Reggie Willits walk and a Juan Rivera pinch-hit double puts runners on second and third. Instead of Figgins (who isn't a bad hitter, .330 in the real 2007 season) coming to the plate, Brandon Wood gets the call to pinch-hit. I was completely shocked by the move, considering Wood was a rookie who only batted .152 in 33 atbats in the real season in three callups during the year and was only on the roster because Macier Isuturis got injured for the remainder of the playoffs in the first round.

Wood though does what every rookie dreams of doing, as he rips a fly ball over the fence for the shocking 3-run homerun which ties the game back up, 5-5. I couldn't believe it. Apparently neither coulkd anyone else, as the 10th inning goes quietly. In the Braves 11th with Dustin Moseley just called in from the bullpen for the Angels, Edgar Renteria gets a single and then Chipper rips his second big hit, a 3-run homerun to give the braves the 7-5 lead that they do not relinquish. I had forgotten about Chipper's other hoimerun with all the excitement in the bottom of the 9th until I realized that he goes 4 for 6 at the plate knocking in 4 runs and smoking the two homers.

The series resumes in Atlanta after a well-deserved day off for travel, with game three pitchers being Jered Weaver for the Angels against the Braves' crafty veteran John Smoltz. The Braves are 5-1 in the playoffs so far at home.

Atlanta Braves beat the Los Angeles(AL) Angels in 11 innings 7 to 5.

The score was tied at 5 after nine. Atlanta won it in the 11th inning. After
two outs Edgar Renteria started the rally when he stroked a one-base hit.
Jones was next and he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 5th of
the season). Atlanta had 13 hits for the night while Los Angeles(AL) had 9.

Rafael Soriano(2-0) went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Dustin
Moseley(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 runs in 1 inning
and saw his ERA jump from 3.75 to 4.85.

'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park tonight,' Jones said. 'I'm
glad I decided to play!'

October 24, 2007 Angels 10, Braves 1 (Angels lead series, 1-0)

In a game that was much closer than the final score makes it appear, the Los Angeles Angels take game one of the World Series with a 10-1 victory. A last-minute change of starters for the Braves, as Tim Hudson got an extra day of rest after two rough starts in the NLCS so Buddy Carlyle gets the start instead against John Lackey. Carlyle did not dissapoint, only allowing one earned run in his almost 6 innings of work.

The Angels opened the scoring in the 2nd inning when Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur drops what should have been the third out allowing a run to score. The Braves tie it right back up in the 3rd on three singles for Kelly Johnson, Edgar Renteria and Mark Teixeira, but the Angels get their lead back in the bottom of the 4th via a Howie Kendrick leadoff triple and a Reggie Willits double.

The score would stay 2-1 until the 7th inning, when the floodgates would open. The Angels get 5 runs in the 7th off of Oscar Villarreal, with the big blow being a Nathan Haynes 3-run triple. Carl Paronto stops the 7th inning bleeding, but opens the wound back up in the 8th when Mike Napoli rips a 3-run homerun. Meanwhile, Lackey quietly puts the Braves in check going 8 innings scattering 5 hits and the one run, getting his third playoff win overall. You may notice the interesting line for Casey Kotchman for the day - zero at-bats for the day and with scoring two runs and coming to the plate five times. He walked 3 times, had a sacrifice bunt, and was hit by a pitch.

Hudson will get the start for the Braves in game 2, as they try to right the ship against the Angels' Kelvim Escobar. Interesting statistic that you might expect - 20 game winner and second in the NL Cy Young voting Tim Hudson so far for the playoffs is 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA in three starts!!

October 19, 2007 Braves 9, Mets 4 (Braves win series, 4-3)

The Atlanta Braves ride the cheers of the hometown crowd to a berth in the World Series against the Los Angeles Angels, winning the final two games of the NLCS in Atlanta. The Braves got 4 runs in the 2nd inning today and never looked back, coasring to the 9-4 win. But not without a scare.

In the top of the 7th after a tiring Chuck (not Chris, as I called him earlier) James had loaded the bases with two out, Oscar Villarreal comes in relief with the score 7-2, Braves lead. First batter Carlos Delgado rips a long, high one to rightfield on a ballpark homer chance. Delgado, batting from the left side with the righty Oscar on the mound, gets a 5 on the split card. However, lefties in Atlanta only have a 1-4 chance of a homer, so it ends up a long inning ending flyout. Had James (who is a lefty) still been on the mound still, Delgado would have batted from the right side and it would have been a grand slam homerun and closed the gap to 7-6 as righty batters have a 1-9 homer chance.

The Braves get two more runs in the 8th and the Mets get two runs in garbage time in the top of the 9th, but it is nowhere near enough for New York

There will be co-MVPs for this NLCS, Edgar Renteria and Chipper Jones. Renteria batted .357 for the series (10-28) while knocking in 7 runs, including 3 today and 3 yesterday. Chipper Jones had hits in every game for a .444 pace (12-27) and knocked in 6, four of those in the last two games. I couldn't decide between one or the other, so they both get the award as they were both instrumental in the Braves winning the series, especially the final two at home.

Also, I forgot to mention that this is now the third straight season that the Indians have lost in the ALCS.

The World Series will begin October 24th in California, with two 20 game winners doing battle in the form of Tim Hudson for the Braves and John Lackey for the Angels.

October 18, 2007 Braves 4, Mets 1 (series tied, 3-3)

The Braves will force a game seven, as John Smoltz's arm, some timely hitting and thousands of tomahawk chopping fans propel the Braves to the 4-1 win. Both starters, Smoltz and Pedro Martinez, traded gooseggs on the scoreboard until the Braves 5th inning, when all four of their runs score via an Edgar Renteria RBI single and a 3-run nomerun for Chipper Jones.

Smoltz almost gets the shutout, but a solo homerun for Carlos Beltran with one out in the top of the 9th spoiles it. After a walk, Rafael Soriano comes in and gets an out and allows a hit to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs. Shawn Green grounds out weakly to second, and Braves win!

For the pivotal game 7, it will be Tom Glavine for the Mets against Chris James for the Braves, with the winner advancing to the World Series. These two also faced each other in game 3, which the Mets won 2-1 in 11 innings.
