April 4, 2007 Phillies 4, Braves 1

Cole Hamels continues his 2006 brillance by pitching shutout ball until the 9th, while striking out 12 Braves to give the Phils their first win of the season. With a fairly low pitch count, I didn't pinch hit for Hamels when he came up in the 8th inning and left him in to try for the shutout. Edgar Renteria leads off the 9th with a homer, goodbye shutout. Tom Gordon goes the rest of the 9th for the save. A nice 2 run homer in the bottom of the 8th for Wes Helms to give the Phils a 4-0 lead, which is why I left in Hamels. Had the score still been 2-0, I would have pinch hit and brought Gordon on to start the 9th. As it turns out, Gordon gets the save anyway!

Cole Hamels dominated striking out 12 Atlanta batters as the Philadelphia
Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves by the score of 4 to 1 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Hamels(1-0) put on a good performance. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits
and no walks in 8 innings. Philadelphia managed 8 hits in their victory.

Hamels got help from Tom Gordon who was credited with his 1st save. Tim
Hudson(0-1) was the losing pitcher. Charlie Manual was asked about the
performance of Hamels, 'He had his good stuff out there tonight. The fans
really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to
give him even more adrenalin.'
