October 14, 2007 Braves 2, Mets 1 (11) (Braves lead series, 2-1)

The series resumes in New York, and the croud at Shea is treated to a real thriller as the lefties Chuck James and Tom Glavine do battle. They weren't too thrilled with the final score however.

The Mets draw first blood in the 3rd inning when Moises Alou beats out a possible inning ending double play grounder after James had issued three straight walks to load the bases, enabling a run to score. The Braves tie the game in the 5th on a solo homerun for Brian McCann, and the score stays tied for 5 more innings. In the top of the 11th Willie Harris singles and Edgar Renteria bunts him to second base. After a foulout and intentional walk, McCann strikes again ripping a base hit scoring Harris fron second. With Rafael Soriano being used for the 6th and 7th innings, Peter Moylan comes in for the save attempt and retires three straight Mets.

The Mets will try to tie the series in game 4, sending Oliver Perez to the mound to battle the Braves' Buddy Carlyle.

3 to 2 at Angels Stadium.

Los Angeles(AL) scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After two were out
Guerrero delivered a base-hit. Garret Anderson came next and he smacked a
single. Mike Napoli then lashed a single resulting in an exciting win for
Los Angeles(AL) and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Both
teams finished the game with 8 hits.

victory. Tom Mastny(0-1) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 3 hits and

October 12, 2007 Braves 4, Mets 3 (series tied, 1-1)

The Braves hand the Mets their first postseason loss and even the series at a game apiece. Andruw Jones has the hot bat today after yesterday's failue at the plate, knocking in 3 of the Brave runs with an RBI double in the 2nd and a 2-run single with the bases loaded (coming through this time!) in the 4th. John Smoltz helps his own cause with a sac fly for the 4th Braves run of the game, also in that 4th inning, and that would prove to be the difference. The Mets get solo runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th to get within one, but Rafael Soriano retires the Mets 1-2-3 in the 9th inning for the save.

After an off day the series shifts to Shea Stadium with Chris James on the mound for Atlanta and Tom Glavine taking the hill for the Mets against his former team to see who will get the upper hand in the series.

October 12, 2007 Angels 2, Indians 1 (Angels lead series, 1-0)

Despite the Indians getting double digits in hits, too many wasted chances with 10 left off base only gets them one run on the scoreboard. Orlando Cabrera carries the hot bat of the day, knocking in both Angel runs with a 1st inning double to score Chone Figgins from first and a solo shot in the 5th. The Indians finally get on the scoreboard in the 6th inning, with a Victor Marninez double and Ryan Garko's single scores Martinez, but Francisco Rodriguez puts the lights out again with a 2 inning save, his 4th of the playoffs.

For game 2, ir will be Fausto Carmona for the Indians against the Angels' Jered Weaver.

October 11, 2007 Mets 5, Braves 4 (Mets lead series, 1-0)

The New York Mets take game 1 of the NLCS as pitcher John Maine helps his own cause with a 2-run single in the 2nd inning, and the Mets jump out in front 4-0 after three. The Braves try to comeback, getting two in the 5th and one more in the 7th to close within a run. The Mets get an insurance run in the 8th, and it proves to be a very important insurance run.

Billy Wagner, with saves in all three first round games against the Giants, runs into a little trouble in the 9th. Kelly Johnson scores on a grounout after his leadoff triple, Chipper Jones hits a single his third hit of the day, Mark Teixeira walks and Brian McCann gets hit by a pitch to load the bases full of Braves with two outs. Andruw Jones can't deliver though, as he grounds out with the bases loaded for the final out as the Mets take game 1. Maine gets the win as Wagner holds on for a hard-earned save.

For Game 2, two seasoned veterans will get the call - Pedro Martinez will take the hill for the Mets against John Smoltz for the Braves.

WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Carlos Beltran robbed Mark Teixeira of an extra base hit.
Top 7th: Kelly Johnson robbed Luis Castillo of a base hit.

Second baseman Luis Castillo had 2 base hits at Turner Field where the New
York (NL) Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 5 to 4.

In the top of the 2nd inning New York (NL) scored 3 runs when they had 3 base
hits. The critical plate appearance was by John Maine who disappointed the
partisan crowd when he lined a base-hit which was good for two runs. Atlanta
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

The win went to Maine(2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Billy
Wagner recorded his 3rd save. Tim Hudson(0-1) ended up with the loss.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Willie Randolph said after the game. 'Maine did not have
command of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'

October 10, 2007 Angels 5, Blue Jays 1 (Angels win series, 3-2)

The Blue Jays put up a hell of a fight in the series, but John Lackey proves to be just too much in game 5 as he goes the distance and having a shutout until 2 were out in the 9th as the Angels check their ticket for the ALCS showdown with the Cleveland Indians.

A. J. Burnett was no slouch today for Toronto, as the only runs the Angels got off him was via a Casey Kotchman 2-run double in the 4th. The Angels get some breathing room off of Scott Downs in the 8th, with a Vladimir Guerrero 2-run homer and a Howie Kendrick RBI double. Orlando Cabrera helpd out some with a 4 for 4 day and 2 steals. The Angels ran roughshod on the bases for the series with 9 steals in 14 attempts. A nice performance turned in for a losing cause for Alex Rios of the Jays with a 3 for 4 day.

Series MVP - undoubtedly John Lackey, 2-0 with a 1.10 ERA for the series only giving up 2 runs to the Blue Jays in almost 17 innings over the two starts.

Game 1 of the ALCS will be on October 12th in Los Angeles, with C. C. Sabita going for the Indians and Kelvim Escobar taking the hill for the Angels.

October 8, 2007 Blue Jays 11, Angels 10 (10) (series tied, 2-2)

What a wild. crazy, absolutely insane game. The play account is blogged after the game to make it easier to follow, as I will just give the highlights.

The Blue Jays (actually me as I do the lineups and decide the starters, but the computer plays the game) decide to give Ray Halladay the start on only 3 days rest since he only went 3 2/3 innings in game 1, and it almost backfired on them as he allows 6 runs in the first two innings including a Garrett Anderson grand slam. The Jays though keep Halladay in the game with 7 runs over the first two innings, six of those on a pair of 3-run homeruns for Russ Adams in the 2nd and 3rd innings.

The Jays up the lead to 9-6 with two more runs in the 4th until Juan Rivera ties it up on one pitch with a 3-run homerun for the Angels in the 7th. It quiets down some and goes to extra frames until the Angels get the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on an error to take a 10-9 lead and have their chance to win the game and series. Francisco Rodriguez comes in to try to get his 3rd save in the series, but doesn't as he throws a wild pitch which ties the game and then a walk-off double for Reed Johnson for another run wins the game for the Jays in the bottom of the 10th.

Starters for the deciding game 5 - Cy Young award John Lackey for the Angels and A. J. Burnett for the Blue Jays, with the winner going on to face the Indians in the AL Championship Series.

Third baseman Russ Adams rocketed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Rogers Centre
where the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Los Angeles(AL) Angels in 10 innings 11
to 10.

Both teams were tied at 9 runs apiece after nine innings. Toronto ended up
winning it in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Adams keyed the
rally when he laced a base-knock. Adams was safe at second on a stolen base.
Gregg Zaun then reached on an error. Francisco Rodriguez then unleashed a
wild pitch which plated a run. Matt Stairs got his chance to keep things
going, but he went down on strikes. Reed Johnson kept things alive and
doubled giving Toronto the victory and sending the 48,628 home-town fans home
happy. It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 6 times.

Jeremy Accardo(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning.
Rodriguez(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.

October 7, 2007 Braves 9, Cardinals 3 (Braves win series, 3-1)

Cardinals starter Kip Wells becomes the second Cardinal starter of the series to be injured early in a game as he gets knocked out in the very first inning, and the Braves lead the game 3-2 entering the bottom of the 8th inning. Chris Duncan rips his second homerun of the game for the Cards in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 3, but the Braves explode in the top of the 9th for 6 runs to take the game and the series in four games.

Ryan Ludwick cooled off a bit today with a 2 for 4 day and no homers or RBI but still for the series goes 10 for 17 (.588 avg), 3 doubles, 5 homeruns and 14 RBI as he bats in over half of the total runs in the series scored by St. Louis. Those stats will give Ludwick the series MVP award, one of the few times in history that a series MVP will be from the losing team. Just no denying him the award with that kind of series, win or lose.

The National League Championship Series, featuring the New York Mets against the Atlanta Braves, will begin October 11th in Atlanta. Game One starters are scheduled to be John Maine for the Mets and Tim Hudson for the Braves, two of the top three vote getters in the NL Cy Young voting this year.

Andruw Jones hit 2 doubles at Busch Stadium where the Atlanta Braves beat the
St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 9 to 3.

Atlanta came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning when they scored 6
runs on 6 hits. The key at-bat was by Chipper Jones who deflated the mood of
the partisan fans when he smashed a two-run homer (his 1st of the season).
Atlanta out-hit St. Louis for the game, 13 hits to 9.

Peter Moylan(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Ryan
Franklin(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 3 hits and no
walks in 1/3 of an inning.

October 7, 2007 Blue Jays 4, Angels 0 (Angels lead series, 2-1)

The Angel offense gets limited to 5 hits by a trio of Blue Jay pitchers and Toronto gets their first win of their series on Canadian soil with the combined shutout. Adam Lind was the hitting star, knocking in 3 of the 4 Jays runs with a sac fly and a 2-run single. The Angels run wild on the basepaths with 4 steals, but it does them no good on the scoreboard.

2007 team stats

After seeing your overall league stats in the blog, that got me thinking - I never put mine in!! A little late and out of sequence in the blog, but here they are.

I can see why your Nationals did much better than mine, winning the division instead of losing 100 games. Despite pretty much the same batting average, your team scored over 100 more runs and the ERA was almost a run lower. As for the Phillies, they were even more power laden in regards to homeruns in your replay with the batting average only one point off and could score plenty of runs, but as in mine couldn't pitch worth a shit. A higher ERA in your season than mine, believe it or not. But like I said, if they didn't hhave that 13-1 run to end the season the ERA would have been higher.

October 6, 2007 Mets 3, Giants 0 (Mets win series, 3-0)

The New York Mets await the winner of the Cardinals-Braves series, as Tom Glavine and Aaron Heilman combine on the shutout. As expected, the Giants get knocked out early since they had no business being in the playoffs in the first place. The Mets now sit back and wait to see who they will play in the NL Championship series.

Series MVP - Billy Wagner. For lack of amore clear-cut choise, Wagner gets the nod with two saves and 2+ innings of scoreless ball.

In a game for the baseball purist, Tom Glavine(1-0) and Barry Zito(0-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, New York (NL) Mets finally emerged
victorious over San Francisco Giants, 3 to 0.

New York (NL) jumped on top of San Francisco in the 2nd inning plating an
isolated run utilizing 3 base hits. After two were out Moises Alou blasted a
solo shot (his 1st of the season). That was all Glavine needed. Both teams
totaled 5 hits on the night.

Aaron Heilman earned his 1st save.
