september 12, 2006 Devil Rays 6, Red Sox 1

An almost exact reversal of last game's final score, as Rays avoid the sweep and halt the Sox winning streak at four. John Lester absorbs the loss with a sloppy outing, only going 4 allowing all 6 Rays runs and walking four. Clay Buchholz (also sloppy with four walks in three innings) and Javier Lopez finish up. 11 Rays left on base, with 10 of those in the first five innings. The Sox magic muber does drop to 8 however, as the Blue Jays lost.

Side note: In the last Phillie blog, I errored in which teams were ahead of them in the homer department. It is the Brewers and the Reds, not the Brewers and Cubs.

In a lop-sided win the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were certainly pleased to stop the
bleeding as their 5 game losing streak was finally halted and ripped the
Boston Red Sox by a 6 to 1 count.

Edwin Jackson(6-14) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 5 hits and 1 walk
in 7 innings. Jackson mowed down 8 Boston batters. Neither team managed to
score after the 4th inning.

Jon Lester(2-4) was the loser. He was touched for 7 hits and 4 walks in 4
innings.

September 11, 2007 Rockies 5, Phillies 3

Two players finally getting somewhat hot after sucking for the majority of the season keep the Phils in the game, but in the end the bullpen coughs it up again. First, on the pitching side Adam Eaton for the fourth consecutive start pitches decent and also gets his season high in strikeouts of 9. Over Eaton's last four starts a 2-0 record and an ERA of 3.28. Not bad for a guy whose ERA has been hovering over 6.50 most of the season.

On the batting side, Pat Burrell continues to steamroll right along. Over his last 23 games, he has had at least one hit in all but 3 of them, with 11 homers and 27 RBIs (including one of each today) and has upped his batting average 30 points over that stretch. Ryan Howard also rips one over the fence for all three runs coming off homers, the Phillies weapon of choice for the season. Over 200 dingers as a team, third most in the majors behind the Brewers and Cubs.

However, Eaton hands the game to the bullpen knotted at 3 and Geoff Geary coughs up a 2-run homerun in the 8th to Ryan Spillborghs to absorb the loss. An all too common occurence for Geary this year, evidenced by his 1-8 record. The Phillie starters for the year have an ERA of 5.14, the relievers 6.10, which all combines to the worst team ERA in the majors at 5.43. That has been the team's problem this year, the pitching.

In a close game it was the Colorado Rockies 5, the Philadelphia Phillies 3 at
Citizen's Bank Park.

Colorado came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 2
runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Jamey Carroll initiated the
scoring spurt when he lashed a single. Ryan Spilborghs was next and he
cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 10th of the season). Colorado
out-hit Philadelphia for the game, 12 hits to 6.

Franklin Morales(3-2) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Morales
was helped out by Jorge Julio who recorded his 2nd save. The loss was
charged to Geoff Geary(1-8) in relief.

September 11, 2007 Red Sox 6, Devil Rays 2

Kevin Youkilis blasts two homers, Mike Lowell adds a dinger of his own and Tim Wakefield gets his 10th win as the Sox upend the Rays. The big story for the day though isn't Youk or Lowell, it is the battery of Wakefield and Kevin Cash. Cash, in a rare start, throws out three D' Rays stealing (including Carl Crawford twice!!) and Wake almost gets a shutout before allowing a couple of runs in the 9th and also picks two Rays off at first base. The daring on the basepaths Devil Rays paid for it today with the two picks and three caught stealing.

The Sox magic number drops to 9 with the win. Boston is the closest to joining the Angels in clinching their division, as none of the other four divisions have a leader by more than four games. Bound to be some exciting races going down the stretch.

September 10, 2007 Phillies 8, Rockies 4

A big 5-run Phillies 2nd inning proves to be enough as they beat the Rockies. An interesting variety of ways to score runs in the inning, as the first run scores on a Kyle Lohse squeeze, runs 2 and 3 score on a Chase Utley single, and the 4th and 5th on a Ryan Howard double. Howard would also add a two-run homerun later in the game for his 46th homerun of the year, second in the majors behind Adam Dunn's 49.

Despite the win, a win today by the Mets officially eliminates the Phillies from the playoff picture. The typical slow Phillie start this year just never improved much, and they just have not done as well as expected no matter what I tried. Time to just play out the string now, I guess. I believe this will be the first year since I have started doing the SOM on the computer that both the Phillies and Red Sox will not make the playoffs.

Jamie Moyer helps his own cause with an RBI single in the 2nd to give the Phils the 1-0 lead, and the lead holds until the 6th when the Marlins get an unearned run to tie the game. Tthe bullpen coughs it up again with the winning run coming off Geoff Geary on a Jeremy Hermedia homer in the 8th inning, and the Marlins get an insurance run in the 9th.

The loss basically, but not officially, eliminates the Phillies from the playoffs. The only way for them to get in now is to win 20 straight and for the Mets to lose 20 straight. I would be more likely to win Powerball than to see that happen!

In a two run game the Florida Marlins got by the Philadelphia Phillies by the
score of 3 to 1.

Logan Kensing(2-0) was dominant in relief. No one was able to reach base in
his 2 innings. For the game Florida out-hit Philadelphia 8 to 3.

Kevin Gregg earned his 26th save. Geoff Geary(1-7) was the losing pitcher in
relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.

September 9, 2007 Red Sox 3, Orioles 2 (11)

Despite solid starts from both starters, Josh Beckett and Jeremy Guthrie, neither is involved in the decision. Two runs in the Orioles 2nd innings akmost holds up, but a run for the Sox in the 5th and a Big Papi solo homer in the 7th tie the game. An Oriole threat in the 10th inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd with no out, is squelched by Jonathan Papelbon as he retires three straight to keep the tie intact. Kevin Youkilis leads off the Sox 11th with a blast over the center field wall for the 3-2 lead, and Paps just stays in for the bottom of the 11th as he gets the win.

With the no-decision today, 16 wins and only three starts left, Beckett's chances for a 20 win season are dashed. No 20 game winners yet, but three pitchers have 19.

In other league news, the Los Angeles Angels have clinched the AL West with a victory today. That will tie them with the 1998 Yankees and the 2002 Braves for the thord earliest clinch date in history, as the 1999 Indians AL record of September 8th and the 1975 Reds record of September 7th will still stand.

contest in the 11th inning. Kevin Youkilis hit a bases-empty home run (his
15th of the season). Boston banged out 11 hits on the afternoon.

Jonathan Papelbon(2-4) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. The
loss was charged to Jamie Walker(5-3) in relief. He allowed 1 run and 3 hits

September 8, 2007 Red Sox 14, Orioles 2

With only playing four games (two days on the schedule) in the last month and a half, I figured it was time to start playing again!

The Sox put a pasting on the Orioles with virtually no help from the top of the order. the 1-2-3 men in the lineup go 3 for 18 on the day, including an 9 for 6, 4 whiff day for David Ortiz. Theur help wasn't needed though, as the bottom three picked up the slack going 9 for 13 combined. Jason Varitek 2 homeruns as part of a 3 for 4 day, and Julio Lugo going 4 for 5 with a couple of doubles helps out.

September 7, 2007 Marlins 17, Phillies 8

The Marlins score in all but the 3rd and 9th innings, with 7 runs coming off of John Ennis in his only start for the year and embarass the Phillies. The scoreboard pretty much explained the game after a wild pitch by Tom Gordon in th 9th, saying "the Phillies can't seem to do anything right!"

The only Phillie highlight for the game was a Pat Burrell grand slam in the 7th inning, as the offense finally woke up and scored six runs late to at least make the final score somewhat respectable.

Third baseman Miguel Cabrera smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Citizen's
Bank Park as the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count
of 17 to 8.

Cabrera had a good day at the plate. He blasted a two-run home run in the 1st
inning, laced a single in the 3rd inning, laced a one-base hit in the 5th
inning and delivered a solo blast (his 33rd of the season) in the 8th inning.
Florida provided plenty of action in the 8th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits.
The Florida offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

Rick Vanden Hurk(5-8) went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory.
John Ennis(0-1) was the loser. He served up 3 gopher balls in 3 innings.

'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park today,' Cabrera said. 'I'm
glad I decided to play!'
