| Ervin Santana makes everyone forget about his previous two disasterous starts, as he goes 7 solid innings striking out 8 and allowing an unearned run as the Angels take game 5 by the score of 5-3 and now sit one win away from a world championship. Pretty much all Angels today, with Casey Kochman ripping his first homerun of the playoffs, a 2-run shot, to open the scoring in the 2nd inning. The Braves do get one run back in the 3rd on some shoddy defense. A walk and 2 strikeouts has a runner at first when Chipper Jones hits one to right field which Vlad Guerrero drops, which should have been the third out of the inning, to put runners at second and third. Mark Teixeria hits a single to right, runner on third scores, but Vlad comes up throwing and nails Chipper at the plate. The Angels get another run in the 4th on a Kotchman RBI single, and get two more in the 5th thanks to some shoddy Braves defense. Garrett Anderson and Chone Figgins hit back to back singles for runners at first and third. Figgins tries to steal second base, with the throw by Brian McCann sailing into centerfield as Anderson scores and Figgins ends up at third. Vlad hits a sac fly (by now making up for his error earlier), Angels now lead 5-1. It would stay that score until the bottom of the 8th, when Justin Speier allows a 2 out, 2-run homer to Chipper Jones (Jones' 3rd of the series and 6th of the playoffs), which closes the gap to 5-3. Francisco Rodriguez comes on for the 9th and retires the Braves in order for his second save in as many games, and an 0.87 ERA for the playoffs overall. The very happy Angels, as they take two of three in Atlanta, get games six and seven (if necessary) at home after a travel day. A Halloween showdown for game 6, as Tim Hudson will get the call for the Braves and Kelvim Escobar takes the hill for the Angels as the Halos go for the championship. Game six and seven, scheduled for October 31st and November 1st, will be the lastest scheduled games in World Series history. The 2001 World Series was played between October 27th and November 4th, but that was because of 9/11 and the season got extended a week. |
