| The Mets get a well-rounded offense with all starters except for Luis Castillo getting hits. John Maine displays his Cy Young winning form, going 8 1/3 innings and striking out 11 Braves for his second win of the series and third overall in the playoffs, along with getting a base hit, walk and scoring a run at the plate. The Braves would mount a threat in the 9th as they get a walk and error off of a tiring Maine and Aaron Hielman allows a hit to load the bases with two outs. In comes Billy Wagner to face pinch-hitter Yunel Escobar, who he strikes out to end the game and get his third save of the series. The series will resume in Atlanta after a travel off-day, and the Mets will try to win the pennant on hostile soil by sending Pedro Martinez to the mound to do battle with John Smoltz in game 6. A rematch of game 2, in which Smoltz got the better of Martinez by a score of 4-3. |

John Maine mowed down 11 Atlanta batters and Jose Reyes had 3 base hits at
Shea Stadium as the New York (NL) Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 7 to
3.
Maine(3-0) put on a good performance. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and
4 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. New York (NL) out-hit Atlanta for the game, 13
hits to 4.
Maine got help from Billy Wagner who earned his 5th save. Tim Hudson(0-2)
absorbed the loss. He was knocked around by New York (NL), allowing 11 hits
and 3 walks in 6 innings.
Bobby Cox was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see
that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the
strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
