September 29, 2007 Dodgers 5, Giants 2

Nothing spectacular about the game itself, but with the Giants game being played last on today's schedule and with having to manually play it, now I can give you the NL playoff update.

Had the Giants won this game, it would have clinched the divisision for them as the Padres lost. That loss for the Pads was bad news for them, as a Mets win today puts the Mets one game up in the wildcard race amd the Giants one game up in the NL West.

What it all boils down to is this: the Padres MUST win their final game of the season, and hope for either the Giants or Mets to lose. Depending which one loses will depend of if the Pads would be tied for for the NL West or the wildcard. If BOTH the Giants and Mets lose AND the Padres win, that will give a 3-way tie for the NL West/wildcard. The Padres and Giants would play a playoff game for the division title, and the loser would play a playoff game against the Mets to decide the wildcard the next day.

In the NL Central, the Cubs lose while the Cardinals win. That puts St. Louis one game ahead with one to play. A Cardinals win or Cubs loss will give St. Louis the division. A Cardinals loss and a Cubs win will yield a tie, with a playoff game to decide the division and the loser goes home.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves are just sitting back waiting for all this mess to sort itself out so they will know who their first round opponent will be. In the AL, in case you forgot by now with all the NL excitement, the matchups are Los Angeles-Toronto and Boston-Cleveland.
