Jon Lester gets another sloppy start, walking 5 including two with the bases loaded, and gets the loss. Meanwhile, A's starter Joe Blanton holds the Sox in check for the majority of the game, allowing two big hits - solo homeruns by Big Papi in the 1st inning and Manny in the 9th. The Sox would get another run in the 9th to close within two and get the tying run to first with one out, but Jason Varitek strikes out and Jacoby Ellsbury flies out to end the game.

In a tight game it was the Oakland Athletics 5, the Boston Red Sox 3 at Fenway
Park.
 
Oakland took the lead for good in the top of the 4th inning scoring one runner
using 2 hits.  Boston threatened in the 9th but Oakland was able to put down
the rally.  
 
Joe Blanton(18-10) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory.
Santiago Casilla recorded the save, his 7th.  Jon Lester(2-6) took the loss.
He surrendered 6 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings.
