September 22, 2007 Red Sox 16, Devil Rays 6

The Red Sox run on all cylinders, ripping out 21 hits and tie their run high in a game for the season as they bombard the Rays. Four runs in the first two innings set the tone, and they would rip 6 Tampa relievers for 12 runs over the final four innings. Daisuke Matsuzaka gets his 15th win, striling out 11 until beginning to tire in the 7th.

Good days all around, with Big Papi having a 4 for 5 day scoring 3 times and knocking in 3 and hitting a homer, Mike Lowell gets his 20th homerun, Jacoby Ellsbury goes 3 for 5 from the leadoff spot and scores 3 times, and Julio Lugo rips two doubles from the bottom of the order. I figured that I could entrust a 10 run lead to Eric Gagne for the bottom of the 9th, and he holds the Rays scoreless.

But once again, the Blue Jays win to keep pace in the division, so the Sox magic number falls to 2. The Jays also lower their magic number for a wild card clinch over the Yankees down to 2. Barring any epic collapses, the AL playoff picture looks pretty certain. The Angels have already won the West, and the other four playoff spots are just about clinched The Indians (magic number 4) in the Central, Red Sox the East, and the Blue Jays the wild card. Anaheim-Toronto and Boston-Cleveland is how it is looking right now for the first round.

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Delmon Young robbed David Ortiz of a Homerun!

Daisuke Matsuzaka whiffed 11 batters and David Ortiz had 4 hits and 3 RBI at
Tropicana Field as the powerful Boston Red Sox embarrassed the Tampa Bay
Devil Rays by the lopsided score of 16 to 6.

Ortiz was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He cleared the fences for a two-run
home run (his 32nd of the season) in the 1st inning, lined a single in the
3rd inning, banged out a one-base hit in the 6th inning and singled in the
7th inning. Boston bats were very productive in the 6th inning with 5 runs
on 5 hits and the 9th inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits. Boston had many
opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.

The win was credited to Matsuzaka(15-7) who went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 6
runs. Andy Sonnanstine(7-6) was the loser. He was knocked around,
surrendering 6 runs in 5 innings.

Matsuzaka didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he
had 11 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a
decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty
good, isn't it?'
