September 22, 2007 Phillies 4, Nationals 2 (14)

Some very interesting stuff to talk about today. A pitchers duel betwen Kyle Kendrick and Tin Redding leads to a 2-1 Phillie lead entering the Nats 8th. With two out and Kendrick still on the mound, Dimitri Young comes in to pinch-hit for the Nationals. I counteract with a lefty, J.C. Romero, to get Young to switch to the right side. The Nats manager counteracts with another pinch-hitter, Justin Maxwell. I am sure you know about him, with that monster card he has against lefties. No way in hell that Romero is staying in, so I bring in righty Tom Gordon. Since Maxwell totally sucks against righties, a new pinch-hitter is announced in D'Angelo Jimenez. Gordon stays in, and Jimenez grounds out to end the inning. For the one at-bat, three pitchers and three pinch-hitters with two hitters not even taking a swing and one pitcher not even throwing a pitch!

The Nationals do tie it off Gordon in the bottom of the 9th after Felipe Lopez leads off with a single, steals second, and is knocked home on a Ryan Zimmerman single. It stays tied with not much happening until the top of the 14th, when Ryan Howard clocks a 2-run shot for homerun number 51 off of Winston Abreu for the 4-2 lead, which is the final. Both teams almost emptied their rosters today.

The game also continues two streaks. For the Phillies, their 7th straight win. For the Nats, their 9th straight loss.

Ryan Howard connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI at RFK STADIUM as the
red-hot Philadelphia Phillies beat the struggling Washington Nationals in 14
innings by the count of 4 to 2.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Philadelphia came out
the victor in the 14th inning. Aaron Rowand got things going when he was hit
by a pitch. Howard next to the plate and he cleared the fences for a two-run
home run (his 51st of the season). Philadelphia won despite being out-hit by
Washington 12 hits to 8.

Brett Myers(5-6) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Winston
Abreu(1-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1
walk in 1 inning.
