September 18, 2007 Phillies 10, Cardinals 3

The Phillies continue to play spoilers, ripping Todd Wellemeyer and Kip Wells for double digits. Cole Hamels, in his first game back after a month out, pitches much more Hamels-like, shutting out the Cards for the first six innings until tiring late.

Some bizzare managerial moves for the Cardinals manager today. First of all, that pitcher hitting 8th thing is bizzare to begin with. Then Kip Wells, who has started 26 games this season, comes in for his 3rd relief appearance of the year in the 6th inning. When the Phillies rip him for 5 runs in the 8th inning, I thought for sure he would be pinch-hit for when he led off the Cards 8th. Instead, he hits much to my surprise. What does he do - he rips a homerun!!! That was it for Hamels' day after that, and Brett Myers finished up. Even Myers can't blow an 8 run lead, but he did allow a homer.

This Cardinals team is definitely not like the Cards of old, as they have the fewest stolen bases of any team in the majors with only 25. Hell, Jimmy Rollins and Coco Crisp have more than that by themselves. To top it off, the Cards have been caught stealing 26 times for more caught than stolen. I doubt that has ever happened before over the course of a full season for any team, ever. It might have back in the old days, but I don't know. I will have to check now, because I am damn curious.
