| Chase Utley has a nice 3 for 5 day with two doubles, one of them knocking in two important runs in the 4th inning, as the Phils beat the NL Central leading Cardinals. Bound to be a hell of a race in the NL Central over the upcoming days. The Cubs are only 3 games back, Reds 3 1/2, Brewers 6 and the Astros 8 back. Only the Pirates are so far eliminated from division comtention. The current magic numbers and the second place teams for the other divisions are: AL East - Red Sox number of 4 with the Blue Jays 8 1/2 back AL Central - Cleveland number of 7 with Minnesota 6 back and Chicago 7 back AL West - Angels already clinched NL East - Atlanta number of 9 with the Mets 4 1/2 back NL West - Giants number of 11 San Diego only 3 back For the wild cards, in the AL the Blue Jays are 3 ahead of the Yankees, and the NL the Mets are 2 ahead of the Padres. Bound to be some excitement down the stretch, but all the Phillies can do is try to play spoiler in this series against the Cardinals and an upcoming series against the Braves. |
