October 6, 2007 Indians 7, Red Sox 4 (Indians win series, 3-0)

UUUGGGHHH!!!!! That is all I can say about this game. For the third year in a row, the Red Sox lose to the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the playoffs. A lot happened in the game, though.

The Red Sox take their first lead of the series on a Coco Crisp sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning, but the lead is erased quickly when Kenny Lofton hits a 2-run homer in the Indians half of the 2nd. The Sox get the lead back in the top of the 3rd when David Ortiz finally comes alive, smoking a 2-run homerun to put Boston up 3-2. The lead holds until the bottom of the 5th, when a Trot Nixon squeeze (I was shocked at a squeeze with Trot!!!) scores a run to tie the game 3-3. Another Coco sac fly gives in the top of the 6th give the Red Sox the lead back, 4-3. Again, the lead doesn't hold as Jhonny Peralta whips an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th to retie the game, 4-4. Then came disaster.

Hideki Okajima comes in relief of Javier Lopez in the bottom of the 7th with two runners on. The first batter he faces, Victor Martinez, gets a hold of one and plants it into the outfield seats for the backbreaking 3-run homerun and a 7-4 Indians lead. With the wind sucked out of the sails, the Sox don't put up much of afight the remainder of the game and the Indians win.

The Sox score only 6 runs for the series with only two extra base hits. The usually teliable defense gave out in game one with the costly Manny error, and the usually reliable hitting just wasn't there. So, there is always next year.

The Indians wait in the wings for the winner of the Angels-Blue Jays series for the AL Championship, with the series to begin October 12,
