June 19, 2007 Indians 4, Phillies 3

Some sloppy Phillie defense costs them dearly, as their comeback attempt falls a bit short against the Tribe. In the 6th inning, with Ryan Garko on second and the Indians alerady up 2-1, Mike Rouse (with his .150 batting average) rips a double to center field. Usually reliable fielder Aaron Rowand throws home to try to get Garko at the plate. He throws over Carlos Ruiz's head to score Garko and Rouse, who went to third on the throw home, scores on the overthrow. 4-1, Indians.

The Phils mount the comeback though, with back to back dingers for Chase Utley (part of a 4 for 5 day) and Ryan Howard in the 8th to close the gap to 4-3. In the 9th, Jimmy Rollins extends his hitting streak to 15 games with a one out single and steals second. Shane Victorino grounds out to send Rollins to third, with the 4 for 4 at that point Chase Utley coming to the plate. Utley makes his first out of the day at the worst time, striking out to end it stranding Rollins 90 feet from tying the game.

First loss of Kyle Kendrick's young career in his second major league start, and he can thank Aaron Rowand for it.

One run was the difference at Jacobs Field as the Cleveland Indians defeated
the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 3.

Jason Stanford(1-0) pitched a solid game. He allowed 7 hits and 1 walk in 6
and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA from 5.68 to 3.46. Philadelphia had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Stanford got help from Joe Borowski who was credited with his 10th save. Kyle
Kendrick(1-1) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 6
innings.

'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Gary Lucas
said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have
to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'

June 19, 2007 Braves 1, Red Sox 0

A classic pitchers duel between Josh Beckett and Tim Hudson. Neither was around for the finish however, as I had to pinch-hit for Beckett when he came up in the 8th with the Sox trailing 1-0 (despite him only throwing 87 pitches!) and Hudson goes 7 1/3 shutout innings. Beckett pitches more than well enough for the win, allowing only four hits, but is the hard luck loser as Andruw Jones ripped a solo homerun in the 2nd inning for the only run of the game. Had the game been in Boston, I might have left Beckett in to try to go the distance to give the bullpen a break.

The Braves get the combined shutout, with Peter Moylan and Rafael Soriano finishing up.

Also of note, Coco Crisp is back leadoff again due to Dustin Pedroia's recent 2 for 25 slump. Batting leadoff has been very unkind to the Sox so far this season, as leadoff batters are batting only .207 so far. No matter who has been there (Lugo, Pedroia, Crisp) they have sucked. I move them out of leadoff, they get hot again and whoever went to leadoff slumps off. Switch them again, same thing. Almost eerie. I am almost ready to try Big Papi leadoff, but I won't get that crazy!!!!!!!

In a game for the baseball purist, Tim Hudson(9-4) and Josh Beckett(7-4)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Atlanta Braves finally emerged

Hudson pitched a fine game. He went 7 and 1/3 innings surrendering 6 hits and

The Red Sox jump out to the 4-0 lead, but the Braves score in each of the final 6 innings including a big 6 run 5th and outscore the Sox 11-1 the rest of the game to beat their former inter-city rivals. Curt Schilling absorbs the loss, as despite him singling to get and RBI he couldn't pitch as well as he hit and allows most of the damage with 8 runs in 5 innings of work

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Chipper Jones robbed Kevin Youkilis of a base hit.

Chipper Jones cracked 2 homeruns and scored 3 times at Turner Field as the
Atlanta Braves beat the Boston Red Sox by the count of 11 to 5.

Jones had a good evening at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in
the 4th inning and delivered a solo blast (his 10th of the season) in the 8th
inning. Atlanta had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6
separate innings.

The win went to Chuck James(5-4) who allowed 5 runs in 8 innings. Curt
Schilling(8-4) was hit with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and
2 walks in 5 innings.

June 17, 2007 Red Sox 6, Giants 2

Manny's solo blast in the 6th breaks a 2-2 tie as the Sox take 2 of 3 from the boys from the Bay. Papelbon was going to get a break today, as after the Sox got a run in the 8th on 3 straight walks and a single the lead was 4 runs, but Hideki Okajima runs into a little trouble in the 9th allowing a double and a single. Paps comes in after all, faces one batter, and gets save number 19. If they were all only that easy!

June 17, 2007 Phillies 12, Tigers 4

After yesterday's 14-1 romp, the Phillies rip the Tigers again 12-4, the third game in the last four that the Phils have scored double digits in runs. The offense has finally woken up. It didn't look good in the beginning, as the Tigers got 3 runs right out of the gate off Adam Eaton, but 5 consecutive singles for the Phils in their half of the 1st before getting an out get the 3 runs back, another single later in the inning scores run number 4, and they cruise from there.

Justin Verlander had one of the more interesting pitching lines you will see through the first 2 innings with 6 hits, 4 runs allowed - but with 6 strikeouts! Every one of the first six outs was a whiff. The Phillie batters had more whiffs than runs today even with scoring 12 runs, as they struck out 13 times!

Abraham Nunez and Greg Dobbs apparently fell asleep for the game. While their teammates were smashing the ball all over and out of the park, Dobbs goes 0 for 5 and Nunez 0 for 4, with 4 strikeouts! At least Nunez did walk once, and did score a run.

Interesting stat of the day - the Phils score 12 runs, but only 10 RBI. The reason being that 2 runs scored on Yoman Bardazo wild pitches, on consecutive batters!

The Philadelphia Phillies batters feasted on the Detroit Tigers pitching at
Citizen's Bank Park. The final score was a lop-sided 12 to 4.

Adam Eaton(4-8) had a fairly solid outing. He surrendered 8 hits and 1 walk
in 6 and 1/3 innings. Philadelphia had 14 hits for the game and Detroit had
11.

Justin Verlander(7-3) took the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 4 innings of work.

June 16, 2007 Phillies 14, Tigers 1

The Tigers use half their pitching staff as Jamie Moyer shows his arm works both ways as the Phillies put a whippin' on Detroit. Not only does Moyer only allow one run through 7, he also ripped a bases-clearing double for 3 RBI, goes 2 for 4 and scores twice!!

Moyer wasn't the only Phillie to have a big day at the plate, as Aaron Rowand rips a granny, Shane Victorino with a 2-run shot and a nice 2 for 4, 3 RBI and a double day for Ryan Howard. Four errors by the Tigers didn't help their cause, although shockingly only one run was unearned. All kinds of defensive substitutions for the Phils in the later innings, to give some of the starters a well-deserved break.

June 16, 2007 Giants 2, Red Sox 1

Classic pitchers duel between Daisuke Matsuzaka and the undefeated Matt Cain, who remains undefeated going to 12-0. One mistake pitch cost Dice-K today - a solo shot in the 8th for Ray Durham, only the 5th hit allowed on the day. Pedro Feliz also had 3 doubles for the day, none though were involved in any of the scoring.

The one Sox run was scored by JD Drew, who had advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a Cain wild pitch which tied the game 1-1. It almost looked like a start wasted for Cain, until Durham came through with the homer.

Matt Cain(12-0) and Daisuke Matsuzaka(6-4) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Cain and the San Francisco Giants coming out on top of the Boston Red
Sox 2 to 1.

The deciding run was scored by San Francisco in the 8th. After two outs Ray
Durham ripped a solo home run (his 10th of the season). Boston threatened in
the 9th but San Francisco was able to put down the rally.

Brad Hennessey was credited with his 10th save. 'We won because we did the
little things right.' Bruce Bochy said after the game. 'This is why we
practice things over and over and over, so when we get in close games we
don't make mistakes.'

June 15, 2007 Red Sox 7, Giants 6

Even the white-hot Giants are cooled off a bit at Fenway, losing their third straight. The Gianys had tied the game in the 4th, turning a 4-0 Sox lead into a tie game with a 3-run homer for Bengie Molina and a solo blast for Pedro Feliz back to back, but Julio Lugo comes through for a change getting three with one swing in the bottom of the 4th.

An uncharacteristically wild Papelbon in the 9th allows the Giants to load the bases with one out, but Paps gets Randy Winn to tap one in front of home which Varitek takes, steps on home and throws to first for the DP and gives the Sox the victory.

The Boston Red Sox edged the San Francisco Giants at Fenway Park by the score
of 7 to 6.

Boston brought 3 runs across the plate in the 4th inning. The critical plate
appearance was by Julio Lugo who brought a roar from the partisan Fenway Park
fans when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 6th of the season). San
Francisco had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Julian Tavarez(3-5) went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the win.
Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his 18th save. The loss was charged to
Barry Zito(10-3). He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 and
2/3 innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Gary Lucas said after the game. 'Tavarez did not have command
of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'

June 15, 2007 Tigers 5, Phillies 3

The game was nowhere near as close as the score would indicate, as only some sloppiness by Detroit would give the Phillies all 3 of their runs in the bottom of the 9th on a bases loaded walk, a bases loaded hit by pitch, and a run scoring on a passed ball.

I did get a little daring in the bottom of the 7th. With two out, Jimmy Rollins on third, Chase Utley at first and Ryan Howard at the plate, I went for a delayed steal of home. The Tigers led 5-0, Jeremy Bonderman is shutting down the Phils, need runs somehow. Bonderman is a +6 at holding runners, so I thought hey I might have a shot at this! The splits came up a 1-3 to catch Utley at second, and a 1-8 to get Rollins at home. I went for it, Utley breaks for second. On the throw to second, Rollins breaks for home. The Tigers don't throw back home, and get Utley at second. The split came up a 19 anyway, so it didn't matter what they did. Even the fastest guy in the world would have been out on a 19.

I think about it now, and maybe it wasn't too smart. First, there were two outs so they will go for the easiest runner to get. Second, Ryan Howard is at the plate who could easily get three runs on one swing of the bat. Third, I should have tried the straight double steal of second and home instead of the delayed steal might have had a better chance at it. But I figured what the hell, make things interesting!

In a close game it was the Detroit Tigers 5, the Philadelphia Phillies 3 at
Citizen's Bank Park.

Detroit went ahead for good in the top of the 3rd inning plating an isolated
run. Philadelphia was out-hit by Detroit, 13 hits to 8.

Jeremy Bonderman(4-3) went 7 innings allowing no runs for the victory.
Bonderman got help from Todd Jones who was credited with his 7th save. Jon
Lieber(4-3) took the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings.

When questioned, Jim Leyland remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt
this good - heck, it's been a while since we had a win period!'

June 14, 2007 Rockies 6, Red Sox 2

When I went to start the game, the lineup set up kind of surprised me. JD Drew leadoff? But, I figured what the hell, go with it! Change of pace. Drew does fine, getting 2 doubles and the Sox pound out 10 hits, but 10 left on base and a rough start for Josh Beckett does them in. Four doubleplays turned by the Sox today, or else the score could have been much different.

A brief note about the comparisons between the Sox next opponent, the San Francisco Giants, and the Rockies. As we all know, the Rockies played the Red Son in the World Series last year, winning 90 games. So far in the SOM season, they have a long ways to go to get to that pace, as they currently sit in last place 9 games below .500, 21 1/2 games behind....the San Francisco Giants! The real life Giants lost 90 games last year, but are absolutely plowing through the SOM schedule at 50-15, almost .800 ball! And the Giants are actually currently on a 2 game losing streak, the first time all season they have lost back to back games. Of course, that impressive record was helped considerably by the 17 game winning streak earlier in the season.

BTW, if you are curious, the current worst team in the majors is the Detroit Tigers at 22-43, but only 9 1/2 games out of first because the division-leading White Sox are 2 games below .500!!

At Fenway Park the Boston Red Sox easily handled the Colorado Rockies by the
score of 6 to 2.

Boston jumped on top of Colorado in the 3rd inning with 2 runs using 2 hits.
After two outs Coco Crisp got things rolling when he laced a one-base hit.
Crisp swiped second base. Kevin Youkilis then drew a walk. David Ortiz was
up next and he doubled knocking in a run. Manny Ramirez stepped into the box
and was walked intentionally to load the bases. J.D. Drew added to the
outburst and drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning. For the game
Boston out-hit Colorado 12 to 8.

Curt Schilling(8-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and
allowing 2 runs. The loss was charged to Josh Fogg(5-4). He allowed a few
too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 6 walks in 4 innings.

The winning ways continue for Boston. They now have a record of 8-2 in recent
days. With the loss Colorado now has a record of 28-37, worst in the
division.

June 13, 2007 Phillies 14, White Sox 9

Kyle Kendrick, despite being roughed up for 5 runs, manages to hang on the required 5 innings and gets the win in his major league debut. He has the Phillie offense to thank, as a 9 run 3rd inning (on only 5 hits) gives the Phils the big lead early. The White Sox made it a slugfest, outscoring the Phils 8-4 the rest of the way.

Of note, Rod Barajas gets two errors for the game, twice overthrowing runners on steal attempts giving the runners third base. One of them, catcher A. J. Pierzyski the last man you would expect to steal, got the steal when the split card came up a 1 on a 1-1 chance of a steal!!

Jimmy Rollins went yard and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the Chicago (AL) White Sox by the score of 14 to 9 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Rollins had a good day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning, bombed a
two-run dinger (his 10th of the season) in the 3rd inning and doubled
knocking in a run in the 3rd inning. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings,
Chicago (AL) could not get the win.

The win was credited to Kyle Kendrick(1-0) who went 5 innings allowing 5 runs.
The losing pitcher was John Danks(3-6). He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 2 innings.

Philadelphia now has a record of 27-39. Chicago (AL) has a record of 30-32
after the loss.

June 12, 2007 Rockies 7, Red Sox 1

Doug Mirabelli knocks in the only Sox run, but his sloppy fielding and a Brad Hawpe 2-run homerun give the Rockies all the runs they would need. Kaz Matsui, in the 3rd inning, stole second and third with Mirabelli overthrowing third base on the allowing Matsui to score. He also had two passed balls for the game, oddly enough not when Tim Wakefield was on the mound! Both were in the 9th, with Joel Piniero on the hill.

Aaron Cook goes the distance for the Rockies, as they end the Sox 6 game winning streak. Still a most impressive 12-2 in their last 14 games, as they have turned a 4th place, 2 game behind defecit into now leading the division by 2 1/2 over the second place Blue Jays.

Aaron Cook pitched a complete game as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Boston
Red Sox by a score of 7 to 1 at Fenway Park.

Colorado took the lead for keeps in the top of the 2nd inning when they scored
2 runs on 1 hit. That was all the offense they were to need. Both teams
totaled 7 hits on the night.

Cook(4-4) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Tim Wakefield(3-7)
ended up with the loss. He gave up 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

With this win, Colorado has a 28-36 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Boston
will hope that this loss is only a 'blip' on their recent 8-2 run - and not a
start of a new trend.

I wasn't sure how this game would turn out at first with two struggling pitchers on the mound, both with ERAs over 5.00 and a combined 4-14 record between them, but Cole Hamels gets back to his winning form over the now 1-8 Jose Contreras. Hamels scatters 7 singles for the shutout, the first complete game shutout for a Phillie pitcher this season and the second complete game (also by Hamels.). Hamels strikes out 8 along the way, putting him one shy on the 100 mark at 99 K for the year so far.

BTW, the only teams so far without a shutout are the Reds, Yankees and Devil Rays. The only ones without a complete game are the Red Sox, Brewers and Nationals.
