June 3, 2007 Red Sox 14, Yankees 4

The Sox demolish the Yankees for their 6th straight win, courtesy of an 11 run 3rd inning. The first 7 batters reached base as the Sox almost bat around twice, sending 16 men to the plate with highlights being a Coco Crisp grand slam and Manny with two 2-run homers in the inning.

Meanwhile, Josh Beckett is mowing down the Yanks with 9 strikeouts through 5, finishing with 11 for the day. The Yankees finally bust through off Beckett with a run in the 7th and a Bobby Abreu 3-run homer in the 8th, but it was irrelevant in the outcome.

You can see for yourself how the Sox 3rd went.

Left fielder Manny Ramirez smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Josh Beckett
dominated striking out 11 New York (AL) batters as the Boston Red Sox
destroyed the New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 14 to 4 at Fenway
Park.

Ramirez enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He lifted one out of the park for
a two run home run in the 3rd inning and cleared the fences for a two-run
home run (his 12th of the season) in the 3rd inning. Overall Boston out-hit
New York (AL) 17 to 11.

The win went to Beckett(6-2) who allowed 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Andy
Pettitte(4-6) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 7 hits and 2
walks in 2 innings.

Gary Lucas was asked about the performance of Beckett, 'He had his good stuff
out there tonight. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start
mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

June 3, 2007 Giants 4, Phillies 3

The Phillies never led the whole game, although they were tantalizingly close throughout and had a chance to win it in the 9th. The Giants scored runs all kinds of strange ways, with a Kevin Correia bases loaded squeeze for a run in the 7th and Ryan Klesko's trip around the bases in the 8th on a single, wild pitch, balk (both by Ryan Madson, on consecutive dice rolls!!) and would score on a hit.

And now for the interesting bottom of the 9th for the Phillies. With Brad Hennessey on the mound for the Giants, Carlos Ruiz leads off with a line out. Jayson Werth, pinch-hitting for Madson, walks. Next batter Jimmy Rollins also walks (he had struck out 3 times on the day previously) for runners on first and second. Shane Victorino hits what looks to be a game-ending double play ball, but beats the throw to first with Rollins out at second and Werth going to third. That puts the tying run on third, and the winning run at first with two outs. Chace Utley then walks for the third walk of the inning for Hennessey to load the bases and put the winning run in scoring position. The next batter is Ryan Howard who had a homer earlier in the game, just the man you want at the plate in a situation like that. Down by a run, bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, two outs. Almost storybook like. However, Howard cannot deliever as he strikes out to end the game as the Giants and Hennessey hold on for the win. Agonizing, just agonizing.

June 2, 2007 Giants 8, Phillies 6

Funny how you mentioned about Cole Hamels hitting the other day, as today he goes 2 for 2 with a double and a 2-run single. Unfourtunately, he couldn't pitch as well as he hit as the Giants rip 4 homers off him and 8 runs in 5 innings to hand the Phils another loss.

Ray Durham was the royal pain in the ass today, with a 3 for 5, 5 RBI day including a pair of 2-run homeruns, one in the 3rd and one in the 5th, to go along with an RBI single in the first inning.

Ray Durham cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Citizen's Bank Park as the San
Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 8 to
6.

Durham really lit it up for San Francisco. The Philadelphia fans let him have
it for what he did to their boys. He lined a base-hit resulting in a run in
the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning and smashed a
two-run homer (his 8th of the season) in the 5th inning. San Francisco had a
total of 14 hits for the game.

The win went to Noah Lowry(6-2) who allowed 6 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Steve
Kline recorded his 3rd save. Cole Hamels(3-6) ended up with the loss. He
allowed 4 homeruns in 5 innings of work.

'Durham led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Lowry
said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'

June 1, 2007 Phillies 13, Giants 2

Greg Dobbs has the game of his life and Pat Burrell smokes a grand slam as the Phillies rout the Giants. Dobbs goes 4 for 5, knocking in 5 runs on 2 doubles and 2 homeruns, while Burrell nails his grand slam in the 1st inning, back to back with Dobbs' first homer to chase Giants starter Matt Morris from the game early. Burrell with a 2 for 4, 4 RBI day.

Not to be lost in the shuffle is a great day for Carlos Ruiz, going 4 for 5 also, and the rather unusual line score for Ryan Howard of 3 3 0 0. Howard walked twice and reached on a fielders choice, scoring all three times. The only player who didn't contribute was Jimmy Rollins, going 0 for 5 continuing his recent slump.

Greg Dobbs launched 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
ballclub embarrassed the San Francisco Giants by the count of 13 to 2.

Dobbs punished San Francisco with his bat. He delivered a solo blast in the
1st inning, doubled in the 3rd inning, smacked a three-run homer (his 3rd of
the season) in the 6th inning and doubled plating a run in the 8th inning.
Overall Philadelphia out-hit San Francisco 17 to 7.

The victory went to Adam Eaton(3-6) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs. Matt
Morris(7-3) ended up with the loss. 'I felt great out there tonight' Dobbs
said. 'I was seeing the ball perfectly, and I was right on it with my swing.

June 1, 2007 Red Sox 9, Yankees 8 (18)

Your typical Sox-Yanks battle, only two games worth today with 18 innings needed to finally settle it. But first things first.

The Yankees blew out Tim Wakefield for 7 runs in 5+ innings, going out to a 8-3 lead after 5 1/2. The never-say die Sox, however, get 5 of their own in the bottom of the 6th and Manny's solo homer in the bottom of the 7th would complete the comeback and tie the game at 8-all.

Little did I know at the time that nobody would score again for 11 more innings! In fact, neither team mounted much of a threat after that. Finally, in the bottom of the 18th, the Sox get something going. Jason Varitek led off with a single and Julio Lugo bunted him over to second. Dustin Pedroia can't help out any, popping out for out number two. A wild pitch for Scott Proctor moves Varitek to 3rd, and Coco Crisp (0 for 8 to that point) rips a base hit to score Varitek and finally end the game.

Kudos to the Sox relief corps (everybody pitched today) for only allowing 2 hits over the final 12 innings, including eventual winner Joel Piniero's 4 innings of one hit ball. Not that the Sox did much better as they only got 5 hits ovr the same span. Even had some o'fers today, with Johnny Damon at 0 for 9, Robinson Cano 0 for 8, and even David Ortiz was 0 for 7. Coco was 0 for 8 before the game winning hit, and good ol' A-Rod whiffs 5 times.

Also noteworthy is with the win the Sox move into first place!! 1/2 game ahead of the Yankees, Blue Jays and Devil Rays in the so far surprisingly pathetic AL East. Not as bad as the AL Central though, as division leading Cleveland is one game below .500! I forgot to blog the end of May standings, so I will do that after the Phillies game today.

After the ancient lefties Randy Johnson and Jamie Moyer treat the fans to a tight 3-2 game through 7, the Diamondbacks bust the game open with 4 runs off Clay Condrey in the 8th inning and cruise to victory. Both Phillie runs came on a nice pinch-hit homerun for Jason Werth in the 7th, which at the time made the score 3-2.

May 30, 2007 Red Sox 12, Indians 8

The Sox get out the broom, sweeping the Indians in a wild one. 20 runs, 23 hits, 12 walks, 11 doubles, and 4 homeruns between the teams.

It didn't look good at first, as Cleveland gets homeruns by Casey Blake and a 3-run blast for Trot right out of the gate off Daisuke Matsuzaka to lead 4-0. The Sox bat around in the bottom of the 1st, getting 6 of their own courtesy of 3 straight doubles for Coco, Youk and Papi, a 2-run shot for Mike Lowell and a solo homer for Jason Varitek (back to back with Lowell).

Despite Dice-K leaving the game with an 11-8 lead, he doesn't get the win because he couldn't last 5 innings, knocked out in the 4th allowing 8 runs for the second consecutive start. The win goes to Joel Pineiro, with a solid 3 2/3 innings of shutout long relief. Kyle Snyder and Brendan Donnelly finished up. The relievers after the top of the 4th took over, as after the wild start only one run would score the remainder of the game.
