April 18, 2007 Blue Jays 10, Red Sox 4

The Blue Jays rip Tim Wakefield with 3 homers and 7 runs and he is knocked out in the 5th inning. But, on a good note is 2 homeruns in the game for J.D. Drew and four walk for Kevin Youkilis.
You may notice that Papelbon came in to pitch the bottom of the 8th for the mop up in an obvious non-save situation. The reason being that Paps hasn't pitched in 8 days, and I just wanted to get him some action!!

The balls were flying all over and out of Fenway in the annual Patriot's Day game, and the 3-0 Josh Beckett is stellar on the mound once again. Kevin Youkilis fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, and he and David Ortiz hit back to back homers as part of a 5 run 5th inning which opened up the game. Papi also had two doubles for the game, Jason Varitek with a double and a homer, and Mike Lowell added to the offensive outburst with his first homer of the year.

Cole Hamels was brillant at times, shaky at times, and does get a complete game thanks to a fairly low pitch count, but it ends up a loss with two mistake pitches. All scoring on homeruns today, with Ryan Howard's 2-run shot in the 1st inning, a 3-run bomb by Chris Burke in the 3rd to give the 'Stros the 3-2 lead. The Phils tie it with Chase Utley's solo homer in the 5th, but Carlos Lee gives Houston the lead right back, 4-3, with a solo shot in the 6th. Hamels would retire the last 10 straight of the game, but the Phils could do no damage. Jimmy Rollins did get a 2 out triple in the 9th, but Shane Victorino would fly out to strand Rollins 90 feet from tying the game.

Only one runner left on base for the Astros today, which besides a perfect game is the lowest total I have probably ever had. There might have been some here and there with none left on base but no perfect game, but none that I can think of offhand.

beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 4 to 3.

Woody Williams(2-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Houston. He
was reached for 6 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings and served up 2 'big flies'.
Philadelphia made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

Brad Lidge got the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Cole Hamels(1-2).
By giving up 4 runs in 9 innings his ERA increased from 1.93 to 2.74.

April 13, 2007 Phillies 5, Mets 0

A dominating performance by Brett Myers, 8 shutout innings, 3 hits striking out 13 Astros. Myers saved the best for last, as this is his last start for the season. I wanted to leave him in to try for the shutout, but because he spent so much of the season as the closer his suggested pitch count is only 82. At almost 110 pitches when it came to the 9th, I at least wanted to hopefully hold on to the shutout, so Geoff Geary pitched the 9th for the combined shutout.

Chace Utley is a one man wrecking machine of offense today, with a single, double and triple and knocking in 4 of the 5 Phillie runs. The bats seem to finally be coming alive after sleeping through the first two weeks of the season, as the Phils snap a 5 game losing streak.

Chase Utley collected 2 extra-base hits and had 4 RBI and Brett Myers mowed
down 13 Houston batters as the Philadelphia Phillies outscored the Houston
Astros 5 to 0.

The Philadelphia fans enjoyed the offense provided by Utley. He doubled
knocking in a run in the 1st inning, tripled clearing all three ducks off the
pond. in the 3rd inning and smacked a single in the 8th inning. Neither team
managed to score after the 3rd inning.

The victory went to Myers(1-2) who went 8 innings, allowing no runs. Roy
Oswalt(1-1) was given the loss. He allowed Philadelphia 5 runs in 4 innings
of work.

Charlie Manual was asked about the performance of Myers, 'He had his good
stuff out there tonight. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts
start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

April 13, 2007 Angels 4, Red Sox 0

Another fairly solid start for Tim Wakefield ends up one more in the loss collumn, thanks to no run support. Angels starter John Lackey came within one out of a two-hit shutout, at one point retiring 20 straight between J. D. Drew's one out single in the second and Eric Hinske's pinch-hit leadoff single in the 9th. Lackey started to tire in the 9th, hitting Youk and walking Papi bringing Justin Speirer into the game to face Manny with the bases loaded and two outs. One swing of the bat to tie the game. That big swing never came, though. Oh sure, Manny swung, and swung, and swung missing all three times for the big K and gives the Angels the win.

required. Los Angeles(AL) finished with 9 hits while Boston ended up with 2.

April 12, 2007 Mets 18, Phillies 2

The Phillies continue to struggle in the early going of the season, losing in an embarassing slaughter.

From the beginning, it looked like a long game when the Mets got 3 runs in the first and then get two more in the 2nd thanks to a Ryan Howard error and four straight walks, the last two with the bases loaded, by Jamie Moyer. That was it for Moyer, as John Leiber goes the next four innings holding the Mets to two runs while the Phils got one back on a Shane Victorino sac fly in the 5th, to make it 7-1 Mets entering the 7th.

In the 7th, Francisco Rosario allows the floodgates to open, allowing 6 runs courtesy of a double, three singles, and David Wright's grand slam home run to make the score 13-1. Ryan Howard's first homer of the year makes it 13-2 in the 8th, but the Mets add insult to injury by getting five more runs in the bottom of the 8th, putting the casket in the ground as it had been nailed shut after the 8th.

The Phillies are now off to a 2-7 start which has happened every year that I have played the Phils on the computer SOM, a slow start. It is almost eerie how it has happened every time. Weird.

Top 8th: Jose Reyes robbed Chase Utley of a base hit.

First baseman Carlos Delgado ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the New York
(NL) Mets smashed the overmatched Philadelphia Phillies, 18 to 2.

Delgado really 'lit it up' for New York (NL). He stroked a one-base hit in
the 1st inning, blasted a solo shot in the 4th inning and popped a two-run
clout over the fence (his 5th of the season) in the 8th inning. New York
(NL) provided plenty of action in the 7th inning which saw them plate 6 runs
on 5 hits and the 8th inning when they had 5 runs on 5 hits. New York (NL)
simply wore out the Philadelphia pitching staff, scoring in 6 different
innings.

Tom Glavine(1-1) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. The loss
was charged to Jamie Moyer(0-1). He was knocked around pretty good, giving
up 5 runs in 2 innings.

Delgado said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
tonight. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'

April 11, 2007 Mets 4. Phillies 3

I guess I should call the Phillies "The Choke Artists", as again they choke in the clutch. After a 5th inning Rod Barajas sac fly and a 6th inning Jimmy Rollins homer and Chase Utley RBI double gives them a 3-1 lead, the Mets get 3 in the bottom of the 6th for a 4-3 lead.

The choke came in the 9th. With ex-Phillie Billy Wagner on the mound and one out, Aaron Rowand walks and Rod Barajas doubles for runners on second and third. Pinch-hitter Jason Werth struck out for out number two. Wagner apparently didn't want to deal with the 2 for 4 (double and the homer) Rollins, so he intentionally walked him to load the bases. Shane Victorino couldn't deliver, however, grounding out to end the game with the bases loaded.

4th straight loss for the Phils.

The New York (NL) Mets nipped the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 3 at Shea Stadium
in a hard fought contest.

Aaron Sele(1-0) was solid in relief, and he got credit for the win. He
surrendered no hits and 1 walk in 1 inning. Philadelphia threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.

Sele got relief help from Billy Wagner who gained credit for his 2nd save.
Adam Eaton(0-1) suffered the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 4 hits in 5 and
1/3 innings.

Despite losing Charlie Manual was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over
this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one
of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'

April 11, 2007 Mariners 3, Red Sox 1

The Red Sox outhit the Mariners 7-5, but fall short on the scoreboard and give Dice-K his first major league loss thanks to the double play ball. Five (yes, 5!) double plays turned by Seattle is the difference, and the bat of Kenji Johjina, He knocked in all 3 Mariner runs with an RBI single in the 2nd and a 2-run triple in the 4th.

The one run scored by the Sox in the 8th came as a direct result of avoiding a double play. After Jason Varitek walked to lead it off and Wily Mo Pena came in to pinch-run, I took no chances and Coco Crisp laid down a perfect bunt to send Pena to second. Next batter, Dustin Pedroia, countinues hit torrid hitting (.400 avg.) by knocking in Pena with a single. Pedroia stayed at first on the throw home though. Now I thought about bunting again with Julio Lugo up, since he is one of the best bunters, but didn't want to waste another out and let him hit away. What does Lugo do - grounds into a double play (!) and ends the inning.

1-2-3 9th for J. J. Putz against Youk, Big Papi and Manny and the Sox lose.

SIde note - The Cleveland Indians are no longer undefeated after the 4-0 start, but the sack sack Pittsburgh Pirates are still winless at 0-9!!

April 10, 2007 Red Sox 2, Mariners 1 (Red Sox home opener)

A classic pitchers duel between Josh Beckett and Jeff Weaver to begin the Fenway season. Neither pitcher had a chance at a shutout because all the scoring happened in the first inning! Beckett in fact allowed the first two batters hits, an Ichiro single and Adrian Belter's double for an RBI. The Mariners would not score again. In the Red Sox first, a Kevin Youkilis walk, an Ortiz double, and red-hot Manny knocks them both in with a single. That would also end the Sox scoring, as Beckett and Weaver took over from there.

Beckett goes 8, allows only 5 hits, the one run, and a walk while striking out 9 to go to 2-0. Paps comes in for the 9th and strikes out the side for save number 3 to send the fans home happy.

Weaver(0-1), by the score of 2 to 1.

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning as they scored 2 runs
on 3 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. The pitchers
took over after the 1st inning as neither team was able to score again.

Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 3rd save. Weaver took the loss. He
surrendered 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

April 9, 2007 Mets 4, Phillies 0 (Mets home opener)

The Phillies play their third home opener of the season (their own in the first game of the season, April 6th against the Marlins, and today), and despite another solid start from Cole Hamels it ends on a losing note. John Maine held the Phils in check all game, only allowing 3 hits and going the distance. The Phils had chances though, as they left the bases loaded in the 2nd and had 5 walks for the game, but three double plays turned by the Mets saved them.

Carlos Delgado was the Mets hitting star, with two homers for the day, a solo shot off Hamels and a 2-run insurance homer in the 8th off Geoff Geary. Maine threw 138 pitches to get the shutout. Phils off to another slow start at 2-5.

John Maine shut down the Philadelphia batters on just 3 hits and first baseman
Carlos Delgado ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Shea Stadium where the New
York (NL) Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 4 to
0.

Delgado made sure the New York (NL) fans enjoyed themselves. He lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown' in the 6th inning and popped a two-run clout over the
fence (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th inning. New York (NL) had just 6
hits for the afternoon.

Maine(1-1) was credited with the shutout. The losing pitcher was Cole
Hamels(1-1). 'Everything felt great' Maine said. 'I had a good fastball, I
felt I could throw it by everybody today.'

April 8, 2007 Rangers 9, Red Sox 4

The 5-1 Texas Rangers get out the broom and sweep the Sox. Another lousy atart for Curt Schilling, 11 hits and 7 runs in 5 1/3. It was a 3-2 game until the 6th, when the Rangers busted it open with 6 runs, the big hit a bases loaded triple by Michael Young.

Maybe the friendly confines of Fenway will end the slide, as after an off day the home opener against the Mariners is next on the schedule. Josh Beckett vs. Jef Weaver.

The Texas Rangers had very little trouble at Ameriquest Field downing the
Boston Red Sox. The score was 9 to 4.

Vicente Padilla(2-0) gave a fine effort for Texas. He was reached for 6 hits
and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Padilla whiffed an impressive total of 6
Boston batters lowering his ERA to 4.22. Texas rapped out 13 hits for the
night.

Curt Schilling(0-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

April 8, 2007 Marlins 8, Phillies 7

Another agonizing loss, although the Phils almost mounted the comeback. Details to follow.

Zack Segovia's major league debut (and only appearance of the season) is a bust as the Marlins get 9 hits and 4 runs off him in only 4 innings. The Marlins upped the lead to 8-2 entering the top of the 9th, with Scott Olsen trying to go the distance. I think the Marlins left him a little too long, as this happened:

Cody Ross had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Florida Marlins defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 8 to 7 at Dolphins Stadium.

Ross had a big day at the plate. He doubled in the 2nd inning, ripped a
base-knock which scored a run in the 3rd inning, doubled in the 5th inning
and doubled plating two runs in the 8th inning. Philadelphia had a chance in
the 9th but they came up short.

The victory went to Scott Olsen(1-1) who went 8 innings, allowing 6 runs. Lee
Gardner gained credit for his 1st save. Zack Segovia(0-1) was the losing
pitcher.

April 7, 2007 Marlins 3, Phillies 0

Dontrelle Willis is on top of his game, only allowing 3 hits through 8 1/3 and only allowing one runner as far as second base as the Marlins shut out the Phillies. After struggling Jimmy Rollins walked in the 9th with one out, last game's goat Kevin Gregg comes in and this time deliveres, striking out Shane Victorino and Chase Utley to end the game for the combined shutout. The Marlins get all three runs off 0-2 Brett Myers, with a De Aza RBI double in the 2nd and a 2-run homer for Miguel Cabrera in the 3rd.

I am down to one team remaining undefeated, the 3-0 Cleveland Indians, and one winless team, the 0-5 Pittsburgh Pirates.

Dontrelle Willis came through with a solid 8 and one third innings as the
Florida Marlins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3 to 0 at
Dolphins Stadium.

Philadelphia was unable to recover after Florida went ahead in the 2nd inning
scoring one runner. That was all Willis(2-0) needed. Neither team managed
to score after the 3rd inning.

Kevin Gregg recorded the save, his 2nd. The loss was charged to Brett
Myers(0-2). He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks.
