| Despite outhitting the Braves 14-9 and including Ryan Howard's 45th homer of the year, the Phils fall one short in the column that matters - runs.. One big reason is that the Phillies hit into four doubleplays. Another reason is that these teams are going in opposite directions - this is the 7th straight win for the Braves, and the 4th straight loss for the Phillies. If the Phillies lose to the Braves tomorrow, they will be eliminated from the division race. Speaking of division races, the Angels magic number is down to 4. Still a chance for the Angels to beat the Sept. 7th record by the '75 Reds for the earliest division title clinch date. |

Rafael Soriano stopped Philadelphia cold and Chipper Jones had 2 base hits and
2 RBI as the red-hot Atlanta Braves topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a
score of 5 to 4 at Turner Field.
Jose Ascanio(1-0) got the win with a steady relief outing. He went 2 innings
surrendering 3 hits and 1 walk. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.
Soriano got the save, his 22nd. Geoff Geary(1-6) suffered the loss in relief.
Gary Lucas was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'
