August 28, 2007 Yankees 10, Red Sox 9

A sellout crowd of over 56,000 is treated to a classic shooting match between the Sox and Yankees in Yankee Stadium. Despite perfect days for David Ortiz (5 for 5) and Kevin Youkilis (4 for 4 with a walk) and outhitting the Yankees 15-12, the Sox fall one run short on the scoreboard. All but two of the 19 runs in the game scored as a direct result of a homerun. Here is the homerun summary, with the scores at the time listed Sox first:

Ortiz 2-run homer in top of 1st inning (2-0), Robinson Cano 2-run homer in bottom of 2nd (2-2), Hideki Matsui 3-run blast in botom of 3rd (3-5), Johnny Damon solo in bottom of 4th (3-6), Manny 3-run bomb in top of 5th (6-6), Cano again solo in bottom of 5th (6-7), Mike Lowell 3-run blast in top of 7th (9-7), and Shelly Duncan pinch-hit 2-run homer following a Cano RBI triple in the bottom of the 7th (10-9, which is the final).

In other league news, the first team has been eliminated from the playoffs. By virtue of being 30 games behind the wild card leader and 30 1/2 behind in their division with 29 left to play, the Washington Nationals are officially eliminated from playoff contention. In the A.L., the Oakland A's have been eliminated from the West division race, but not the wild card. The closest to elimination in the A.L.wild card is the Detroit Tigers who are 19 behind, but oddly enough only 14 behind in their division!!

Robinson Cano launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Joba Chamberlain performed
beautifully in relief as the New York (AL) Yankees outscored the Boston Red
Sox 10 to 9.

It seemed that Boston pitching was serving up softballs for Cano to hit. He
cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd inning, cracked a solo homerun (his 19th of
the season) in the 5th inning and tripled plating a run in the 7th inning. A
wild affair, this game saw the lead change 6 times.

Luis Vizcaino(9-5) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Chamberlain recorded his 4th save. Manny Delcarmen(2-1) absorbed the loss in
relief.
