| A big 5 run 5th inning gives the Red Sox the win today, the big hits being a Julio Lugo 2-run triple and a David Ortiz 3-run homer with a Pedroia walk sandwiched in between. Ortiz's homer puts him over the 100 RBI mark for the season, now at 102. Five major leaguers have over 100 RBI for the year so far, the tops being 108 for Alex Rodriguez. Julian Tavarez slumps off a little bit after his recent sensational run (only 5 runs in 27 1/3 innings in last 7 appearances including 5 starts before today) and was going to be replaced in the botttom of the 5th. After the Sox took the lead however, Tavarez stays in to try to go 5 and be in line for the win, which he does at almost 100 pitches. A bit high for Tavarez, but I wanted to try to get him the win. Papelbon of course with the save, number 37. Boy, do lefties love to hit in Chicago's US Cellular Field.. The ballpark homerun rating for lefties is 1-20, guaranteed homerun. Not bad for righties either, at a 1-18. |

In a close game it was the impressive Boston Red Sox 7, the Chicago (AL) White
Sox 5 at US Cellular Field.
Boston scored 5 runs in the top of the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits.
The critical plate appearance was by David Ortiz who silenced the stadium
when he smacked a three-run homer (his 27th of the season). Boston rapped
out 8 hits for the afternoon.
Julian Tavarez(7-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and
allowing 4 runs. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 37th save. The loss was
charged to Javier Vazquez(11-9). He was not very effective, surrendering 5
runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.
'He gutted it out' Gary Lucas said of Tavarez. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'
