| The long ball is both the Phillies friend and foe today as they lose a heartbreaker. First, as a friend. The Phils do most of their scoring in the 3rd inning, getting 6 runs before recording an out to give Dontrelle Willis the early hook. A two-run blast for Aaron Rowand followed by a solo shot for Ryan Howard (Howard's 30th!!) to go along with a 2-run double for Jimmy Rollins and an RBI double for Tadahito Iguchi give them the early 6-1 lead. Now as a foe. Four homers were hit by the Marlins, with the heartbreaking blast in the top of the 9th. With the Phillies leading 7-5 and one already out and a runner on base, Hanley Ramirez triples off Brett Myers to knock in the run and narrow the Phillies lead to one run. Dan Uggla was intentionally walked to hopefully set up the DP and keep Ramirez's speed from going home had the infield been in. The move totally backfires in my face, as next batter Miguel Cabrera gets hold of one and smashes the 3-run homerun to give the Marlins the 9-7 lead. The Phils try to make some noise in the 9th with a Carlos Ruiz walk. Up next is pitcher Jose Mesa, but he has to bat as all the position players have already appeared in the game. He tries to bunt, but has no shot as the pitch goes to the backstop for a wild pitch. I let him hit away, and he walks!! Now the tying run is at first with no outs. Wes Helms flies out for out number one, and Jimmy Rollins cannot deliever this time as he grounds into the game-ending double play. |

Third baseman Miguel Cabrera blasted a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Florida
Marlins rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Philadelphia
Phillies, 9 to 7.
Florida had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning as they scored 4
runs on 3 base hits. The key at-bat was by Cabrera who disappointed the
partisan crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 24th of the season).
Florida banged out 11 hits on the night.
Justin Miller(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Kevin
Gregg recorded his 22nd save. Brett Myers(4-4) suffered the loss in relief.
Fredi Gonzalez was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and win
it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see the
fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of
unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win tonight!'
