| The Phillies were doomed from the start, as the Marlins get 3 runs in the 1st inning plus single runs in the 2nd and 3rd off of Jamie Moyer. All was not lost, as the Phils almost mounted the comeback narrowing the lead to one run entering the 9th, but Ryan Howard strikes out to end the game with the tying run on third and the winning run on first. Despite the Phils having their best run of the season so far since the All-Star break (14-9), they have only gained a half game in the standings. The division leading Mets have gone 16-9 in that stretch, and the wild card leading Braves (behind the Mets by only half a game) have gone 17-7 over the same stretch, with the two teams having the best two records in the National League. That still leaves the Phils 22 games behind the Mets for the division, 21 1/2 behind the Braves for the wild card, and a lot of teams in between. If the Braves were in one of the other divisions, then the Padres would be leading the wild card with the Phillies 16 behind them. Either way, lots of ground to make up in the remaining 50 games of the season. |
