August 14, 2007 Phillies 6, Nationals 5

The Phils give the Nationals a taste of their own medicine, as 2 days after that dramatic Nationals comeback in the 9th over Arizona the Phils pull two comebacks of their own in downing the Nats. The Nationals struck first in the 5th inning, getting the 2-0 lead on a Felipe Lopez RBI single and a Ronnie Belliard sac fly. The Phillies get the first comeback in the top of the 6th, scoring 3 runs basically without a hit helping as Shawn Hill falls apart.

Two singles, a wild pitch and a hit batter load the bases for the Phillies. Jayson Werth gets an RBI the painful way as he gets hit by a pitch, a walk to Carlos Ruiz knocks another run across, and pitcher Kyle Lohse tries a squeeze which he beats out for technically a single and the 3-2 Phillie lead, knocking Hill from the game. Hill for the inning - 3 hits, walk, wild pitch and two hit batters.

The Nationals appear to put the game away in the bottom of the 8th as a Ryan Church 2-run single and an RBI single for Nook Logan get three runs off Clay Condrey and give the Nats the lead back at 5-3, but it doesn't last. Chris Schroder went the 7th and 8th innings unscored upon, so he stayed in for the 9th. But, after a single to Iguchi and a Pat Burrell walk, Ryan Howard flexes the muscles ripping a Jon Rauch pitch into the seats for a 3-run smash and the 6-5 Phillie lead. Brett Myers goes the 9th unscated, and 6-5 is the funal.

This is the 5th straight win for the Phillies, now their longest winning streak of the season.

Ryan Howard connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at RFK STADIUM as the
Philadelphia Phillies staged a comeback win over the Washington Nationals by
the count of 6 to 5.

Philadelphia came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 3
runs using 2 hits. Tadahito Iguchi kicked off the action when he slapped a
single. Pat Burrell came next and he drew a walk. Howard then lost the ball
over the fence for three runs (his 33rd of the season). Philadelphia rapped
out 10 hits for the night.

Antonio Alfonseca(3-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Brett
Myers gained credit for his 6th save. Jon Rauch(4-6) took the loss in
relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 1 hit and no walks.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Howard said. 'If you just
keep trying good things can happen!'
