Left fielder Ryan Church cracked 2 homeruns at Chase Field as the Washington
Nationals won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks by the count of 10 to 9.
Washington had the winning rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 5 runs on
4 hits. The big moment was provided by Church who quieted the crowd when he
depressed the partisan hometown fans with a grand slam home run (his 14th of
the season). Arizona was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5
separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that
pitching is also needed to win ballgames.
Jon Rauch(4-5) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Chad Cordero got the save, his 16th. Jose Valverde(1-2) was tagged
with the loss in relief.
Bob Melvin was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.
Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us
this afternoon'
