July 31, 2007 Red Sox 4, Orioles 2

The Sox close out the month of July in style, with Josh Beckett getting win number 12. After two straight shutouts, Beckett does allow a couple of runs today, although one wasn't his fault when Jay Payton ripped a double with a wild throw by Wily Mo Pena allowing Payton to score. Jonathan Papelbon allows two singles in the 9th, but strikes out the last batter with the tying run at first base for save number 28.

Speaking of strikeouts, Orioles starter Erik Bedard got whiff number 200 for the season when he struck out Coco Crisp for the first out of the 7th inning. 201 now for Bedard, the major league leader in K's. Jake Peavy of the Padres leads the NL with 191.

In a close game the Boston Red Sox got by the Baltimore Orioles by the score
of 4 to 2.

The game started off with Boston taking the lead in the first as they scored 2
runs on 2 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Manny Ramirez
who electrified Fenway Park when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run
(his 26th of the season). Baltimore threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.

The winning pitcher was Josh Beckett(12-4) who allowed 2 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 28th. The loss was charged to
Erik Bedard(6-10). He surrendered 7 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Beckett said,
'this was one of those times.'
