July 30, 2007 Phillies 7, Cubs 2

The Phillies begin a 7 game Midwest road trip with a stop at Wrigley Field for a four game Cubs series, and Cole Hamels comes out shining. Hamels struck out the side on 9 pitches in the first inning, has 7 K through the first 3, and gets 15 strikeouts all together as he goes the distance. Hamels also pokes out two singles and knocks in a run. Homeruns for Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Aaron Rowand also help out the offense.

Not helping the offense any is Ryan Howard. He goes 0 for 5, striking out all 5 times to the plate! That makes Howard and Jim Thome of the White Sox the only players so far this season to have 0 for 5, 5 whiff days at the plate. A-Rod of the Yankees also had 5 whiffs in a game, but in 7 atbats in an 18 inning game. Pat Burrell also whiffs 3 times for the game.

27 strikeouts all together between the two teams, the 15 for Hamels and 12 for the Cubs pitchers (8 of those by Burell and Howard). With all the free swingers on these two teams, not surprising.

Cole Hamels dominated striking out 15 Chicago (NL) batters at Wrigley Field
where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago (NL) Cubs by the score of 7
to 2.

Hamels(6-10) was very good in the win. He allowed just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings. Philadelphia banged out 12 hits on the night.

Ted Lilly(9-8) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the
Philadelphia offense and allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

Lou Piniella was impressed with Hamels and his 15 strikeouts. 'It's tough to
generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'
