July 26, 2007 Phillies 9, Nationals 7

22 year old John Lannan, making his major league debut for the Nationals, is shelled for 8 Phillie runs in 3 2/3 innings for what looked like a easy win for the Phillies at the time. But then with the Phillies, no win is easy.

Chase Utley (the third major league hitter faced by Lannan) welcomes him to the majors in the 1st inning with a solo homerun, but Felipe Lopez gets a 2-run shot in the top of the 3rd off Adam Eaton to give the Nationals the 2-1 lead. Then the Phillies go to work. In the bottom of the 3rd, Shane Victorino blasts a 3-run homer and Aaron Rowand with an RBI single scores 4 Phillie runs, and 3 more score in the 4th on a Utley bases loaded walk and a Ryan Howard 2 run single, putting an end to Lannan's day.

A nice 8-2 lead looked safe until the top of the 7th. Eaton apparently got fatigue really quick as the first three batters of the inning Ryan Church, Jose Flores and Robert Fick get singles to load the bases. Tony Batista knocks in two of them with a double, and everyone remaining on the bases were knocked home on a Ronnie Belliard 3-run homer of Ryan Madson to suddenly make the score 8-7. The Phillies get an insurance run in the bottom of the 7th, and the lead holds up with Gordon and Alfonseca going the 8th and 9th innings even with the Nats making some noise in the 9th.

Even with allowing 6 runs and having his ERA go over 7.00 for the season Eaton does get his first win in a month and a half, Lannan gets the loss in his major league debut, and the Phillies break the Phil-Wash tie in the standings and put the Nationals back in the cellar for the National League's worst record.

Play account follows the box score.

Second baseman Chase Utley jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI as the
Philadelphia Phillies outscored the Washington Nationals 9 to
7.

Philadelphia tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they had 4
base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Shane Victorino who elicited
a roar from the hometown fans when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 11th
of the season). Washington threatened in the 9th but Philadelphia was able
to put down the rally.

The victory was credited to Adam Eaton(5-12) who went 6 innings, allowing 6
runs. Eaton got help from Antonio Alfonseca who earned his 8th save. John
Lannan(0-1) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9
hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Manny Acta said. 'It's bad
enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves,
that's really bad.'
