| The Nats computer manager apparently likes to do very strange things. But more on that later. The Phillie relievers held up fine today, as the Nats relievers were the ones who suck the joint out. A 5-0 Nationals lead off the still struggling Cole Hamels after 3 1/2 innings, with the big shot being a Brian Schneider 3-run homer, gets cut almost in half when the Phils get two back in the bottom of the 4th. The Phillies get three runs in the bottom of the 8th, scoring all three runs when Chad Cordero (who gets the blown save) was on the mound to tie the game. Then came the bizzare stuff. Tony Batista (who played shortstop last game for the first time in 6 years) comes in on defense - this time in centerfield!! Then, he suddenly switches with Austin Kearns as Kearns goes to center and Batista goes to right. I even checked baseballreference, and Batista has never played an inning in the outfield in his entire career!! That move ended up costing the Nationals the game, as Pat Burrell singles, is bunted to second by pitcher Antonio Alfonseca, and Carlos Ruiz walks. Greg Dobbs hits a single to right field to Batista, who of course is a +5 throwing arm. Even pokey ass Burrell has a chanse to score from second against an arm like that, which he does as the Phillies get the walk-off win. Just kind of strange how Batista two games in a row comes in on defense both times at positions not on his card including one that he has never played in his entire life. Last game it didn't matter, but this time it made all the differense between a win and a loss. I even but the play account after the game so you can see it for yourself. |
