July 24, 2007 Nationals 9, Phillies 3

Once again, the Phillie relievers cough up the game, allowing 6 runs in the 8th and 3 more in the 9th. Starter Kyle Kendrick does his job, holding the Nats to when he left the game with one out in the 8th no runs, but does get one charged against him as the Nats open it up on the relievers to the tune of 9 runs over the final two innings - 6 of those of the bat of Ryan Zimmerman. Zim smashes a grand slam in that 6 run 8th off Tom Gordon, then adds a 2-run homer in the 9th off of Jose Mesa.

A managerial move by the Nats leads to something happening that hasn't happened in 6 years. Robert Fick was announced as a pinch-hitter, but when I brought in lefty Mike Zagurski to face the left-handed Fick, right-hander Tony Batista comes in instead. Zagurski stays in, and Batista gets a hit. When the bottom of the 8th came around, Batista took over at shortstop as shortstop Felipe Lopez was pinch-run for in the inning. I notices that he was a 5 fielder and an e88, so that told me something. Shortstop isn't even on Batista's card, and he hasn't played an inning at short since 2001 and not regularly at short since 1999!! No balls were hit to him over the final two innings, so he didn't get a fielding chance.

WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Aaron Rowand robbed Ryan Church of a Homerun!

Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman smashed 2 homeruns as the Washington Nationals
topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 9 to 3 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Zimmerman really lit it up for Washington. The Philadelphia fans let him have
it for what he did to their boys. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam
homerun in the 8th inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 18th of the
season) in the 9th inning. For the game Washington out-hit Philadelphia 14
to 8.

The win was credited to Luis Ayala(2-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Tom Gordon(0-2) was the loser in relief. He gave up 1 hit and 2 walks
without retiring a batter.
