July 22, 2007 Phillies 3, Padres 2 (15)

It took a while and also half their pitching staff, but the Phils eek out the 3-2 win over the Pads in 15 innings, the longest Phillie game of the season, J. D. Durbin pitches spectacular as he only allows 2 hits through his 7 innings, but that was all forgotten by the end of the game 8 innings later.

The Phils draw first blood with a Pat "Butterfingers" Burrell (more on that comment later) solo homer in the 2nd and a Chase Utley RBI double in the 3rd for the 2-0 lead against Jake Peavy, and the score stayed that way until the bottom of the 9th. In the Padre 9th after an out, Brian Giles hits a single. Tom Gordon comes in to hold back the Padres when Milton Bradley hits a fly ball to left. "Butterfingers" Burrell drops the ball for the error putting Giles at third and Bradley to second. I was considering intentionally walking Adrian Gonzalez, but with Mike Cameron after him elect to pitch to Gonzalez. What does he do - rips a double to score both runners and tie the game. I do intentionally walk Cameron and face Khail Greene. Greene singles to center, Gonzalez motors around third not slowing up at all heading for home. A perfect throw by Aaron Rowand nails Gonzalez at the plate to deny the Padres the win. Michael Barrett grounds out to end the inning. WHEW!!

Not much happened until the 15th, when Wes Helms gets the triple snake eyes dice roll (1-1-1), which on his card happens to be a homerun to give the Phils the 3-2 lead. Antonio Alfonseca takes over for the bottom of the 15th, and almost blows it. He gets two quick outs, but Josh Bard doubles and Giles walks. But thankfully, Alfonseca gets Bradley to pop up to mercifully end the game on a winning note.

Next up for the Phillies after a well-deserved day off- the Washington Nationals for the battle of unfourtunately last place in the National League. Pitching matchups are: Kendrick-Bergman, Hamels-Chico, and Eaton-Lannan.
