July 18, 2007 Red Sox 2, Royals 1

This game started out as an unexpected pitchers duel between Julian Tavarez and Odalis Perez (8-17, 6.09 ERA combined) as through the first 3 1/2 innings there were only two hits netween the two teams. The Sox strike first in the bottom of the 4th on a Mike Lowell RBI single, but the Royals get the run right back in the top of the 5th on walk, single, passed ball and sac fly for an unearned run.

In the Sox 8th, they strike again after Dustin Pedroia gets a hit and goes to second on an error by third baseman Alex Gordon (who played the hero in the first game if the series with a 4 for 4 day) and scores on a Papi single. Papelbon comes on in the 9th, does allow a single, and gets a double play grounder to end the game for save number 25.

Despite the relative effectiveness of both starters, neither was involved in the decision as Perez was yanked in the 4th with the Royals tying the game thereafter, and Tavares done after the 6th due to his pitch count getting high with the score still tied. Javier Lopez ends up getting the win for the Sox with 2 innings of shutout ball.

The Sox are 12-3 for the month of July so far, and now hold a 5 1/2 game lead on the second place Yankees.
