July 16, 2007 Dodgers 5, Phillies 4

The Phillies begin a west coast trip with stops in LA and San Diego, which will be the first meetings of the year between the Phils and the Dodgers and Padres respectivelly. Jamie Moyer, by far the most consistent Phillie starter this season, has a personal 5 game winning streak snapped with the loss. Moyer, still with 6 wins, remains in a tie for the win lead on the team with of all people reliever Clay Condrey!

A managerial move I made cost me dearly in the 9th. Lone Dodger all-star rep Takashi Saito is on the mound, trying for the save. After an out, Wes Helms walks. Now being down by two runs, one out in the 9th and Helms being about as fast as molasses going uphill, speed demon Michael Bourn comes in to pinch-run and try to get a rally going. Bourn tries to steal second to get into scoring position, and a perfect throw by catcher Russell Martin nails Bourn at second base for the second out. Next batter Jimmy Rollins blasts one out of the park to narrow the lead to one, and Shane Victorino grounds out to end the game.

Has Bourn not been caught stealing, the homer for Rollins would have scored two runs and have tied the game. That is what makes it interesting having speedy guys like Bourn, Rollins and Victorino on the team - they can steal bases, get extra bases on hits, but sometimes it bites me in the ass when they get caught like today. It just happened today at the exact wrong time, and cost me in the end. Such is the saga of the Philadelphia Phillies season.

The Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers nipped the Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 4 at Dodger
Stadium in a hard fought contest.

In the 5th inning Los Angeles(NL) scored 2 runs with the help of 4 hits. They
would be enough to earn the win. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but Los
Angeles(NL) was able to put down the rally.

Brad Penny(10-4) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
Penny got help from Takashi Saito who was credited with his 22nd save. Jamie
Moyer(6-8) was given the loss.

'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Penny said.
