June 24, 2007 Padres 6, Red Sox 5

The Red Sox conclude their inter league schedule in a back and forth game with both closers, two of the best in the game, blowing saves today. Both starters let their bats talk a bit too, with Josh Beckett ripping a double and Jake Peavy with a 2 for 2, RBI day.

Peavy's RBI single in the 4th (after homeruns were traded between the teams with solo shots for Michael Barrett and Russell Branyan of the Pads and David Ortiz for the Sox) made the game a 3-1 Padres lead, and it would stay that way until the closers got involved. First, it was Trevor Hoffman's turn. He comes into the game with 2 outs and 2 on in the 8th, and blows the save when first batter Manny Ramirez smokes a 3-run smash to give the Sox the 4-3 lead.

Hoffman's blown save ends up turning into a win thanks to usually reliable Jonathan Papelbon. Paps walks Branyan to lead off the bottom of the 9th, gets two quick outs, and faces pinch-hitter Termell Sledge. Sledge rips a high fly into the left field seats for the 2-run pinch-hit walk-off homer and gives the Pads the win, and Papelbon's third blown save of the year. All I can say is you motherfucker to Termell Sledge!!

9-9 for the Sox in interleague play this year.

Russell Branyan lofted one into the 'cheap seats' as the San Diego Padres
staged a dramatic comeback over the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 4 at
Petco Park.

San Diego scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs. Branyan led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Kevin
Kouzmanoff got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.
One out later, Terrmel Sledge came to the plate and popped a two-run clout
over the fence (his 5th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for San
Diego and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. San Diego
ended up with 9 hits for the game while Boston had 6.

The win went to Trevor Hoffman(1-1) who allowed 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings.
The loss was charged to Jonathan Papelbon(0-3) in relief. He pitched 2/3 of
an inning and surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk.

Hoffman and Branyan were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the
great come from behind victory. As Bud Black noted, 'A win like this one can
do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the
players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
