| A run crosses the plate for the Phillies in the top of the 1st, but the first 6 Cardinal batters are involved in the scoring in the bottom of the 1st off Adam Eaton. A walk, single, RBI single, walk to load the bases, a walk to force in a run, and a doubleplay groundout with the bases loaded to plate a run (no RBI) give the Cards 3 runs, and the 3-1 lead. The Cardinals would only get one more hit the remainder of the game, but the Phils could only poke across one more run until the 8th. Sure they had plenty of chances (leaving 14 on base for the second game in a row), but finally score two in the 8th. After an out, Greg Dobbs walks and Rod Barajas (part of a 4 for 4 day!) doubles with Dobbs stopping at third. That brings in Cards stopper Jason Ingringhausen to squelch the rally. He couldn't do it, blowing the save on a wild pitch on his first pitch of the game that tied the game and allowing the go-ahead run to score when the same man at the plate Carlos Ruiz rips a pinch-hit RBI single, which ends the scoring. The loss is charged to starter Adam Wainwright, as both runners in the inning were his responsibility. Antonio Alfonseca goes the 9th for the save, the first save for a Phillie pitcher in almost thre weeks! Most of the Phillie wins lately have not had a save chance anyway. Alfonseca is the 5th Phillie pitcher to record at least one save this season due to the lack of a legitamate closer currently in the pen. |

Catcher Rod Barajas had 4 hits as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St.
Louis Cardinals by the score of 4 to 3 at Busch Stadium.
Philadelphia came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 8th inning with
2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Greg Dobbs was the
sparkplug when he drew a walk. Barajas stepped up to the plate and he
doubled. Jason Isringhausen then had one get away for a wild pitch resulting
in a run. Carlos Ruiz was up next and he slapped a single scoring the final
run of the inning. The St. Louis bats were silent in the bottom of the 9th.
Clay Condrey(5-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings.
Antonio Alfonseca was credited with his 1st save. Adam Wainwright(5-7) was
the loser.
