June 22, 2007 Padres 5, Red Sox 1

The Red Sox conclude their 2007 interleague schedule with a stop in San Diego, and the old boys on the Pads are up to the task. Despite the Sox outhitting the Padres 9-6, 41 year old Greg Maddux proves that he still has some stuff left by pitching shutout ball through 8. When Maddux started to tire in the 9th as the Sox finally poked a run across to spoil the shutout, the 3 1/2 months shy of his 40th birthday Trevor Hoffman slams the door shut and nails the save. Old beats young today, as the 26 year old Daisuke Matsuzaka (who was 5 years old going on 6 when Greg Maddux made his major league debut in 1986!!) gets the loss despite striking out 9 in 6 innings.

The San Diego Padres defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 1 at Petco
Park.
 
Boston fell behind quickly as the San Diego offense came through in the first
inning scoring 3 runners on 3 hits.  That early run support was enough for
Greg Maddux(3-7) and San Diego.  Despite losing, Boston out-hit San Diego 9
to 6.  
 
Trevor Hoffman got the save, his 19th.  Daisuke Matsuzaka(6-5) was hit with
the loss.  Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 9 batters in 6 innings.
