| First game of SOM in over a week with everything going on around here, and it is a doozy. The Sox avert the sweep, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 11th to beat the Braves. Julian Tavarez has a fine outing, only allowing 3 hits through 6, but all 3 were by Chipper Jones with a single, homer and 2-run homer. All scoring in the regulation nine on homeruns, as David Ortiz, JD Drew and Jason Varitek each had solo dingers for the Sox for a 3-3 game after 9 innings. The Sox get 3 in the 11th with the help of some sloppy Braves defense. Papi walks to lead it off, Manny singles to send Papi to third. Kevin Youkilis hits one to left fielder Pete Orr (normally an infielder, Orr came in as a pinch-runner in the 10th and went to left field), which Orr drops it for the error. Papi scores and Youk gets credit still for the sac fly despite not getting out. JD Drew gets a conventional sac fly for run number two, and a Mike Lowell pinch hit single scores a third run. Another unusual occurence today - a stolen base for Big Papi!! Coco Crisp led off the game with a single and a failed hit and run by Dustin Pedroia puts Crisp at second. Papi walks, so I say what the hell, lets go for the double steal. It works as Crisp steals third and Papi rolls into second. Both were stranded though. Almost had a second steal for Papi later in the game with the +9 Bob Wickman on the mound, but he couldn't get a big enough lead. Now that would be amazing to get two steals for Papi in a game!! |

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Atlanta Braves in 11 innings by a score of 6
to 3 at Turner Field.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Boston was victorious in the 11th inning.
David Ortiz led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Manny Ramirez
followed and he delivered a single. Kevin Youkilis then reached on an error
plating a run. J.D. Drew followed and he hit a deep fly bringing in another
run. One out later, Julio Lugo came to the plate and was walked
intentionally. Mike Lowell did his part to keep things going and laced a
one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Boston finished with 10
hits while Atlanta ended up with 5.
Hideki Okajima(3-3) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Jonathan
Papelbon recorded the save, his 20th. Chad Paronto(0-2) was the losing
pitcher in relief.
