July 2, 2007 Red Sox 10, Rangers 2

The Rangers get blown out of Fenway as the Sox get out the broom for the 4 game sweep. Kason Gabbard strikes out 9, only allowing 4 hits in 7. Dustin Pedroia with another big day, 3 for 4 knocking in 4 for a three game stretch of 8 for 14 with 10 RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury continues to impress, 3 for 4 today and an even .500 (6 for 12) since his callup.

But the big story today was this. Out of those 10 runs and 13 hits for the Sox, not one was a homerun, and only three were doubles. The running shoes came out today as the Sox get 6 steals for the game, including 4 for Julio Lugo! Lugo was a big part of that 4 run 1st inning outburst, stealing second AND third in the inning. Also, steals for Mike Lowell and the first career stolen base for Ellsbury, who also got caught stealing once.

Unlike the upcoming Phillies schedule, the Sox are happy about theirs. 14 of the next 17 games are at home, and if you include this series that is a stretch of 18 games out of 21 at Fenway Park.

BTW, the four steals today for Lugo ties the high for the season so far, now a three-way tie between Reggie Willitis of the Angels, Eric Byrnes of the Diamondbacks and now Lugo.

The ice-cold Texas Rangers pitchers essentially took the day off at Fenway
Park as the Boston Red Sox offense erupted for 10 runs while Kason
Gabbard(1-0), with relief help from Manny Delcarmen, surrendered 2 runs to
Texas.

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring 4 runners on 4
hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Gabbard and Boston. That
was all the run support Gabbard required. Boston had 13 hits for the game
and Texas had 6.

The loss was charged to Brandon McCarthy(3-4). He gave up 8 runs in 3 and 2/3
innings of work.
