| I just couldn't believe that this had happened. First, entering the 7th inning the score was 4-3 Phillies lead, The Astros had gotten 2 in the 5th after an RBI single and another Pat Burrell error (his 6th of the season!!) which allowed another run to score to make the score 4-3. AFter what happened a couple of games ago with Burrell, I said fuck this and Michael Bourn came in to play left in the 6th inning not wanting that to happen again later in the game. Then in the 7th, total hell broke loose. Two runs score for the Astros on a Mark Loretta single to give them the 5-4 lead. The Phils take the lead back with 2 runs in the top of the 8th with two Houston errors thrown in for good measure to help the cause to take the lead back, 6-5. Houston gets 2 more in the bottom of the 8th to retake the lead 7-6, and the Phillies get one in the top of the 9th to tie the game 7-all. In the bottom of the 9th, I spent about 5 minutes making this managerial decision trying to decide what to do. There was one out, a 7-7 tie game, runners on second and third, and Morgan Ensberg at the plate. The game had set the infield and outfield to play in, as it always does in the bottom of the 9th with a runner on third and less than two outs. Since the only runner that matters is the runner on third, I was debating whether to keep the infield in and let Ensberg hit, hoping for a grounder to nail the runner at home, or to intentionally walk him since first base was open and set the infield back, to set up the force at any base and hopefully an inning ending double play. I thought and thought, and finally decided to intentionally walk Ensberg since like I said the runners on first and second don't matter. It pays off as next batter Craig Biggio (who switched to catcher in the 8th and committed one of the errors in the top of the inning) grounds into the 4-6-3 doubleplay. Inning over, game still tied. Whew!! I faced the same decision in the bottom of the 10th. Runners again on second and third, this time with nobody out. Carlos Lee at the plate. No thinking this time, Lee is walked intentionally being the good hitter that he is. This time, the infield stayed in since there were no outs. It didn't make a goddamn difference, as it turns out. Morgan Ensberg comes to the plate, and pitcher JC Romero lets one loose, getting by catcher Rod Barajas for the wild pitch, runner on third scores, game over. I could not fucking believe it. A crazy back and forth game, getting lucky a few times, and losing the damn game on a wild pitch. The play account is after the game so you can follow all the action. |

The Houston Astros edged the ice-cold Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings at
Minute Maid Field by the score of 8 to 7.
The score was tied at 7 after nine. Houston won it in the 10th inning.
Hunter Pence delivered a base-hit. Lance Berkman came to the plate and
doubled. Carlos Lee then was walked intentionally to load the bases. J.C.
Romero then let one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch giving Houston the
victory and sending the 40,271 home-town fans home happy. This was a game of
many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5
times in all.
The win was credited to Dave Borkowski(1-2) who went 1 inning allowing no
runs. Romero(0-3) was tagged with the loss in relief.
