June 9, 2007 Yankees 8, Pirates 7

Normally I wouldn't blog a game not involving the Phillies or Red Sox unless something dramatic happens, and trust me this was dramatic. The Yankees get 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th to turn what looks like a 7-3 loss into an 8-7 victory. The dramatic thing is how the Yankees got those 5 runs.

Pirates starter Paul Maholm is still on the mound for the 9th, apparently since it was a 4 run lead the Pirates didn't go to the bullpen. However an already tired Maholm, after getting Bobby Abreu to fly out for the first out, allows a solo homerun to A-Rod to make the score 7-4 and a single to Jorge Posada. With Maholm at over 130 pitches, the Pirates go to reliever Masumi Kuwata, making his major league debut after a good career in Japan.

That move ended up being a big mistake for the Pirates. Kuwata walks Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano to load the bases, still with one out. He gets Josh Phelps on a strikeout for out number two, and the three run lead looks safe. Next batter Melky Cabrera has other ideas. Cabrera rips a pitch over the fence for a walk-off grand slam game winning home run!!!! Now that you don't see all that often - a walk-off grand slam!

It turns out that Masui Kuwata, like I said, was technically a rookie.....at age 39!! He is the oldest Japanese player to come across the ocean and play in the major leagues, and third oldest rookie after Satchel Paige and Diomedes Olivo (whoever he is - he pitched in the 60s for oddly enough, the Pirates! He was 41 at the time of his debut, and Paige was also 41). Kuwata actually was one of the better pitchers in the Japanese league, playing over 20 seasons in Japan. I bet after this game, he wishes he were still in Japan!

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Melky Cabrera robbed Jason Bay of a Homerun!

Catcher Jorge Posada blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the New York (AL)
Yankees staged a dramatic comeback over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of
8 to 7 at Yankee Stadium.

New York (AL) erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 5
runners on 3 hits. The highlight belonged to Melky Cabrera who thrilled the
crowd when he launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun
(his 2nd of the season). Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5
different innings was still not enough for Pittsburgh to come away with the
victory.

The victory went to Scott Proctor(1-3) who went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1
run. Masumi Kuwata(0-1) was the loser in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in
perseverance for you,' Posada noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a
while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And
it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'
