June 8, 2007 Phillies 8, Royals 6

The Phillies begin their interleague play with their first trip to Kansas City since the 1980 World Series with a hard fought win. The Phils started off the game with a 3-0 lead, blew and lost the lead, came back to tie it up, took the lead again, blew the lead again, and finally win the game with two runs in the top of the 9th.

In the 9th with two out, the DH for today Pat Burrell gets his 3rd hit of the day with a single. Michael Bourn comes in to pinch run to get a lot more speed on the bases, since Burrell is as slow as mollasses. It turns out that move wasn't needed, as next batter Greg Dobbs rips a triple that would have scored Burrell anyway. Next man Wes Helms smacks a single to score Dobbs, and the Phils get two runs in the inning. Geoff Geary, who had come on in the 8th to pitch, just stays on for the 9th for lack of a better choice and holds the Royals at bay.

How often do you se this - the Royals starter today, Scott Elarton, goes 4 1/3 throwing 77 pitches. His relief is Zach Greinke, who also goes 4 1/3 throwing 88 pitches for the reliever throwing more pitches than the starter did. Rather unusual, I would think.
