| A little bit of NL-style small ball for the Sox today to sweep the D'Backs for their 6th straight win in a thriller. Both starters pitched fine, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Randy Johnson, but both teams teed off a bit on the relievers. Coco Crisp hits a 2-run double in the 8th to break a 1-all tie for a 3-1 Sox lead, and I decide to go with Mike Timlin out of the pen for the bottom of the 8th. Still a bit of rust apparently, as Chris Snyder rips a 3-run homerun off him to give Arizona the 4-3 lead. But, the Sox come right back off Jose Valarde in the 9th. Manny strikes out for out number one, and Jason Varitek rips a double. Now there is no way that pokey ass Varitek is staying on the bases in a one run game in the 9th, so JD Drew comes in to pinch run. Mike Lowell walks, and Wily Mo Pena singles to load the bases with Julio Lugo at the plate. Now I am thinking with a little speed on third and Lugo at the plate do I dare try the squeeze? I go for it, and it works!! Drew scores to tie the game 4-all. Even better, next batter Hideki Okijima (who came in for Timlin) I just let bat since the score was already tied, hoping for the best. Okajima doesn't dissapoint, going 2 2/3 with 5 K and ends up getting the win for the second game in a row. Meanwhile, in the Sox 11th, Lowell singles, goes to second on a passed ball and third on a groundout. Eric Hinske walks, and Arizona decides to change pitchers, bringing Jailen Peguero in. The first batter he faces is Dustin Pedroia, who smokes a 3-run homer to give the Sox the 7-4 lead. Paps for the bottom of the 11th 1-2-3, and 7-4 is the final. |

Third baseman Mike Lowell had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox outscored the
Arizona Diamondbacks in 11 innings 7 to 4.
Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Boston ended up
winning it in the 11th inning. Lowell led off and started the rally when he
slapped a one-base hit. Doug Mirabelli was a strikeout victim, unable to
help out. Jose Valverde then uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball.
After another out, Eric Hinske came to the plate and drew a walk. Dustin
Pedroia came to the plate and clubbed a three-run home run (his 3rd of the
season). Boston finished with 10 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to Hideki Okajima(2-3) who went 2 and 2/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 17th save.
Valverde(1-1) was the loser in relief.
