| Your typical Sox-Yanks battle, only two games worth today with 18 innings needed to finally settle it. But first things first. The Yankees blew out Tim Wakefield for 7 runs in 5+ innings, going out to a 8-3 lead after 5 1/2. The never-say die Sox, however, get 5 of their own in the bottom of the 6th and Manny's solo homer in the bottom of the 7th would complete the comeback and tie the game at 8-all. Little did I know at the time that nobody would score again for 11 more innings! In fact, neither team mounted much of a threat after that. Finally, in the bottom of the 18th, the Sox get something going. Jason Varitek led off with a single and Julio Lugo bunted him over to second. Dustin Pedroia can't help out any, popping out for out number two. A wild pitch for Scott Proctor moves Varitek to 3rd, and Coco Crisp (0 for 8 to that point) rips a base hit to score Varitek and finally end the game. Kudos to the Sox relief corps (everybody pitched today) for only allowing 2 hits over the final 12 innings, including eventual winner Joel Piniero's 4 innings of one hit ball. Not that the Sox did much better as they only got 5 hits ovr the same span. Even had some o'fers today, with Johnny Damon at 0 for 9, Robinson Cano 0 for 8, and even David Ortiz was 0 for 7. Coco was 0 for 8 before the game winning hit, and good ol' A-Rod whiffs 5 times. Also noteworthy is with the win the Sox move into first place!! 1/2 game ahead of the Yankees, Blue Jays and Devil Rays in the so far surprisingly pathetic AL East. Not as bad as the AL Central though, as division leading Cleveland is one game below .500! I forgot to blog the end of May standings, so I will do that after the Phillies game today. |

Both teams were tied at 8 runs apiece after nine innings. Boston ended up
