| David Ortiz has an awesome 4 for 5 day, but could not get that big hit in the bottom of the 9th as the A's sweep the Sox and hand them their 4th straight loss. Oakland was in control from the beginning, getting 3 runs in the 2nd and what turned out to be a very important run in the 6th. Meanwhile, Chad Gaudin is in control, holding the Sox scoreless for the first 7 innings. They finally bust through for a run in the 8th, as after Julio Lugo singled and stole second Papi knocks him in with his second double of the day (4 for 4 at that point with two doubles and two singles) to make it 4-1. In the 9th with Gaudin still on the mound, Mike Lowell fouled out for the first out. Gaudin hits Jason Varitek, and Coco Crisp singled with Var going to 3rd. That did it for Gaudin, as Houston Street comes into the game. He is promptly greeted by a Dustin Pedroia single, scoring Varitek with Crisp going to 3rd to make the score 4-2. Julio Lugo then hits a slow roller to second. The only play is to first, as Crisp scores and Pedroia goes to second for an out but an RBI. That makes the score 4-3, two outs and Pedroia at second base. Kevin Youkilis then rips one to left, but the ball was hit too hard to score Pedroia as he stops at third. Papi brings his 4 for 4 day to the plate, with the tying run at third and winning run at first. Houston strikes out Papi, and the Sox lose. |

WEB GEMS- Top 6th: Jason Varitek blocked the plate, saving a run!
One run was the difference at Fenway Park as the Oakland Athletics defeated
the Boston Red Sox 4 to 3.
Oakland scored 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning with the help of 3 hits.
They ended up being the winning runs. Boston had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.
The victory went to Chad Gaudin(2-3) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Gaudin got help from Huston Street who was credited with his 4th save.
Josh Beckett(3-2) absorbed the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in 5 and
1/3 innings.
'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Terry Francona 'but it's losing the close
ones that really hurt.'
