April 29, 2007 Yankees 4, Red Sox 3

Chien-Ming Wang goes the distance, and he survives a scare in the 9th to give the Yanks the rubber game of the series. With Wang's pitch count only around 90, he stays in for the 9th to try to go the distance in a 4-1 game. The Red Sox had other ideas. David Ortiz rips a homer to right, followed by Manny's smash over the left field fence for back-to-back homers to make it 4-3. I thought for sure that Mariano Rivera would come in at that point since there were still no outs, but no the Yanks stayed with Wang. It almost cost them. After Eric Hinske grounds out, Mike Lowell slams one to left that looks like it will go out and tie the game. Johnny Damon (who had moved over to left field from center) makes the spectacular catch, robbing Lowell of the game-tying homer. Jason Varitek then grounds out to end the game.

That little line in the box score labeled Web Gems doesn't usually mean much when they happen, but in this game it made all the difference in the world from turning a 4-1 Yankee lead entering the 9th to an at the least three homer, tie score inning for the Red Sox.

FYI, the Giants finally lost to end the winning streak at 17.

WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Johnny Damon robbed Mike Lowell of a Homerun!

Chien-Ming Wang allowed Joe Torre to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
at Yankee Stadium where the New York (AL) Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4
to 3.

New York (AL) brought 3 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning with the help
of 4 hits. Alex Rodriguez led off and keyed the rally when he doubled.
Jason Giambi stepped up next and he was hit by a pitch. Hideki Matsui then
slapped a base-hit resulting in a run. Jorge Posada followed and he stroked
a single bringing in another run. Robinson Cano stepped into the box and
lined a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Boston threatened
in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The win went to Wang(2-0) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Julian Tavarez(0-2)
was the losing pitcher. New York (AL) now has a record of a division leading
14-9. With the loss, Boston has a record of 4-6 lately, 10-14, worst in the
division overall.
